CN is abandoning the rail spur running along Joseph Howe Drive in Halifax and out to the Lakeside Industrial Park.

Under federal law, Halifax Regional Municipality has until March 6th to decide whether it wants to buy the line. The asking price is $3.6 million. If the line is purchased and turned into a recreational trail, it will connect to the BLT Trail (www.blttrails.ca), which in turn links to the St. Margaret's Bay trail.

This is an exciting opportunity for our community. If you support purchase of the line and conversion to a recreational trail, please sign the on-line petition here:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/cnr_trail/

Since the petition will be presented to HRM Council, your signature will obviously have more impact if you live within HRM. But everyone is of course welcome to sign. Signing is free.

An HRM public information meeting ("open house" format) is being held on Monday, February 18th, from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church Hall, 3473 Dutch Village Road, Halifax. If you have any questions, this is the place to have them answered.
