Description:

Helping young and old to appreciate the natural world is a fundamental
building block to environmental education. This is a day-long, experiential,
outdoor leadership workshop for educators, recreation professionals, youth
leaders, programmers, etc. in which you develop your educational skills to
teach others about the natural world. We provide a conceptual orientation to
quality environmental education and then spend the vast majority of the day
experiencing, debriefing and discussing activities so as to identify
effective educational practices and develop strategies and programming ideas
relevant to your participants and organizations. Topics will include
presentation of appreciation and concept activities, use of solitude, and
how to design engaging programs. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Nova
Scotia Outdoor Leadership Development Program and Acadia University's Lyle
Davis Workshop Series. Proceeds from the workshop will go toward the Lyle
Davis Community Engagement Award. Bring your own lunch, snacks provided. The
session will be conducted in the outdoors, so dress appropriately for the
weather. (Space is limited; register early.)

About the Nova Scotia Outdoor Leadership Development Program

Founded in 1979, the Nova Scotia Outdoor Leadership Program (NSOLD Program)
aims to enhance the quality and quantity of outdoor leaders in Nova Scotia
through a comprehensive, experiential leadership development process.
Managed by a volunteer committee working in conjunction with the Nova Scotia
Department of Health Promotion and Protection, the NSOLD program engages
some of Nova Scotia's best outdoor specialists in the delivery of its
programs. For more information on NSOLD, see
www.gov.ns.ca/hpp/physicalActivity/nsold.asp.

About the Lyle Davis Workshop Series

Acadia University Recreation Management faculty are donating their time and
expertise to offer a series of seminars and workshops in support of the Lyle
Davis Community Engagement Award. The award is being established in memory
of a former alumnus, colleague, and friend who met an untimely death in a
climbing accident in 1991. Lyle Davis worked as the Assistant Director of
Admissions at Acadia and later as the Coordinator of Research and
Development Services at the Recreation Resource Centre of Nova Scotia. He
was an avid outdoor enthusiast and musician, and he pursued many other
hobbies. This financial award will be given annually in support of a
deserving student community engagement initiative.
