*Justice in your Cup: A Coffee Grower's perspective: With Herlindo
Hernandez Pu/ Showing of Madre Tierra/Mother Earth, a new film on struggles
for land and labour rights in Guatemala
*
*Herlindo is a member of a cooperative formed by landless peasants who
worked for decades on plantations under exploitative conditions. The
cooperative was developed with the support of the Small Farmers’ Committee
of the Highlands, a Mayan farmers organization and partner of the
Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network and Just Us! Coffee
Roasters Cooperative. The event will include the launch of a new half-hour
documentary, Madre Tierra/Mother Earth. The film shows how peasants are
stuck in the impossible position of earning no money, getting no education,
and condemned to continuing the cycle of poverty by having to work on
plantations. Even those who have some land live four families to a single
house, and the select few who have been able to get access to larger amounts
of land from the land fund have a near- impossible climb to make a living
from this land. At the heart of the story is the organizing work of the
Small Farmers’ Committee of the Highlands. "Madre Tierra" follows the
Committee as they push for getting land into the hands of peasant families.*
