Wednesday, November 25, 2009 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. FREE Admission, Room 125,
Chemistry Building, Dalhousie University, 6274 Colburg Rd.Climate Cover-up
is a bold critique of the unsavory PR campaign that has perverted the public
conversation about climate change. For two decades, when the world should
have been tackling the greatest environmental threat ever to face humankind,
we have been paralyzed by doubt and indecision. That's no accident. As Jim
shows in page after carefully documented page, we've been stalling because
some seedy and self-interested people have worked extremely hard to convince
us the problem may not be real. Climate Cover-up rips the lid off that
disinformation campaign. It exposes early strategy documents in which oil
and coal companies at times working with the tobacco industry describe how
they plan to undermine the integrity of science. Leveraging four years of
work on Jim's DeSmogBlog, Climate Cover-up names names, analyzes tactics and
illuminates strategies. It shows how easily reporters and politicians have
been bamboozled and how badly the public has been deceived. It's time to end
the Climate Cover-up. Please RSVP to rsvp at hoggan.com with 'Halifax' in the
subject line.

(8) SELLING NATURE TO SAVE IT: THE CONFLICTED CASE OF PAYMENTS FOR ECOSYSTEM
SERVICES IN MEXICO
Friday, November 27, 2009, 3:00 p.m. Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences
Building - Rm. 1116, Dalhousie University ALL WELCOME Reception to Follow.
Kathleen McAfee, International Relations,San Francisco State University.
World Bank economists contend that market-based environmentalism offers a
"triple win" for nature, private investors, and the poor. To this end, they
crafted Mexico's National PES program as a model of conservation efficiency
based on monetary valuation. Rejecting the Bank's position, campesino
activists insisted that the values of ecosystem services derive less from
their market prices than from their contributions to peasant livelihoods,
biodiversity, and wider social benefits that cannot be quantified or sold.
The controversies that have embroiled PES in Mexico reflect discordant
understandings of the roles of culture, agriculture, and the state in
sustainable development. They expose the limits of binary categories of
nature and society, and suggest that neoliberal conservation policies,
including global carbon markets, are ultimately incompatible with equity
goals and indigenous development priorities.
