Internship Position - Environmental Education Intern

The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) is a coalition of
individuals, organizations, and institutions working in the Atlantic region,
which are committed to achieving global sustainability in a peaceful and
healthy environment, with social justice, human dignity, and participation
for all. ACIC supports its members in international cooperation and
education through collective leadership, networking, information, training
and coordination, and represents their interests when dealing with
government and others.

ACIC also takes a leadership role in engaging Atlantic Canadians around
issues relating to international development, global sustainability, and
social justice. Through our public engagement work, ACIC strives to give
Atlantic Canadians the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to become
active global citizens.

ACIC is looking for a responsible, experienced person to fill the position
of Environmental Education Intern.
The intern will assist with the coordination and overall management of the
self-assessment process of ACIC's newly developed Code of Ethics.   The Code
of Ethics document outlines key activities/actions ACIC members should
undertake to ensure that they are meeting clearly defined minimum standards
related to environmental protection. A key component of the intern's work
will be the transfer of skills and in building capacity through the
strengthening of civil society organizations. The intern will also support
and assist with the implementation of established projects in environmental
education. This will be achieved through the following activities:

·   Collaborating with the Ethics Committee to develop the key logistical
framework for the self-assessment process for the Code of Ethics;
·   Networking among environmental and other civil society organizations;
·   Developing and implementing a needs assessment;
·   Designing and facilitating workshops on good environmental practices;
·   Conducting outreach concerning environmental issues, particularly with
youth;
·   Developing public education materials related to the above topics.
·   Event planning - logistics, content and publicity;
·   Conducting an evaluation of process and results.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:
·         Undergraduate degree or diploma in international development
studies, environmental studies, or education;
·         Solid oral and written communication skills in English with basic
French an asset;
·         Excellent planning and organizational skills;
·         Experience with developing educational and communications programs
and materials;
·         Strong facilitation skills;
·         Experience developing capacity building workshops and materials;
·         Ability to demonstrate a high-degree of motivation, and
persistence and to work independently and in team settings;
·         Strong analytical skills; ability to understand how to adapt
policy to practice

The intern will gain experience, knowledge and skills in:
·   Working with a membership-based network;
·   Effective written & verbal communication:  communicating with different
audiences. Media work, design skills, writing skills
·   Analytical skills - analysing needs of member organizations, assessing
the best ways in which to communicate ideas/knowledge/skills; policy
analysis
·   Event planning - outreach, logistics, content
·   Capacity building skills - designing workshops, developing learning
objectives etc.
·   Facilitation skills - facilitation for different audiences including
civil society organization staff/volunteers, youth
·   Networking skills  - ability to work with different stakeholders
·   Skills in creating promotional materials;
·   Evaluation skills - intern will be trained in participatory monitoring
and evaluation methods
·   Organizational skills - time management, project management, effective
organizational skills

Eligibility:

This position has been funded by the Government of Canada's Economic Action
Plan and is open youth aged 15-30 who meet the following eligibility
criteria:
·         Unemployed
·         A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person to whom refugee
protection has been granted under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
·         Legally entitled to work in Canada
·         Legally entitled to work in your province or territory
·         Willing to complete a police records check

Location:  The position will be based at ACIC's office in Halifax.

Salary:  $12.00/hour for a period of six months
