Your help is needed to protect an important marine area off Nova Scotia's coast.

A new marine protected area is being proposed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and they're inviting the public to comment until May 14th, 2010.

There are three candidate sites being considered for the Eastern Scotian Shelf. These sites are important for their high species diversity, key marine habitats for species-at-risk, presence of sensitive cold water corals, and important migratory routes for marine mammals and fish. Learn more about the consultation and selection of an MPA off Nova Scotia: http://www.mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/oceans/e/ocmd/mpa/aoi-e.html

Canada lags behind its national and international commitments for establishing marine protected areas. Only 0.5 per cent of Canada's oceans are currently protected and the process for establishing new marine protected areas can be long and tedious, taking up to 10 years!

Please take a moment to help ensure that a new marine protected area is established off Nova Scotia.
