Sea Level Rise Action!



Climate change is a serious issue in Canada, and each region of Canada is
feeling and will feel the effects of climate change differently. Atlantic
Canada will be most visibly effected by sea level rise, which is predicted
to be between 1 and 6 metres over the next 100 years. Atlantic Canada has
already experienced sea level rise greater than the global average due to
the fact that our province is subsiding while water levels are rising.

To depict how sea level rise could effect Halifax if action isn't taken to
avert further climate change, on Friday November 12, Halifax CYD members
will be holding a demonstration on the corner of Hollis and Sackville Street
at noon. We will be drawing a blue line in chalk to show the predicted sea
level line, and will walk along Hollis Street wearing any scuba gear
(snorkels, masks, flippers), rain gear (hats or boots), swimming gear
(goggles, floaty toys, water wings, etc) or ocean themed wear that you can
get your hands on.

Looks like they're going to have to change Lower Water Street to Underwater
Street!

Bring your cameras, snorkel gear and game faces, this is going to be epic.

This action is being organized by members of the Canadian Youth Delegation
(CYD) which is a group of 29 youth from across the country who are
travelling to Cancun for the UNFCCC Climate Negotiations (COP16) in December
and a further group of youth working to raise awareness back in Canada. Four
of the CYD are from Halifax, three attending COP16 and one acting as a home
team leader in Halifax. They are eager to encourage community involvement as
COP16 fast approaching and we need to get to work to build awareness and
make our voices heard!
