Position: Executive Director for Coastal Communities Network

Location: New Glasgow, Nova Scotia



Coastal Communities Network (CCN) invites applications for the position of Executive Director.



CCN is a Nova Scotia-wide, non-profit charity that has been working on rural and coastal issues in Nova Scotia since 1992. Our mission is: to provide a forum to encourage dialogue, share information, create strategies, and undertake actions that promote the survival and development of Nova Scotia's coastal and rural communities. We do this through education, networking to break rural isolation, building skills, being a conduit between communities and government, and building collaborative strategic actions.

The Executive Director is responsible for CCN's overall operations and well-being. This includes working with the Board to create reasonable work plans, facilitating visioning sessions, working closely with the Chair of the Board, and networking widely throughout rural Nova Scotia.



Areas of work include outreach to local organizations and other partners, such as educational institutions, all levels of government, and NGOs; raising funds through government grants, foundations, and special events; collaborating with a volunteer Board of Directors; supervising staff and contracts; creating and monitoring budgets; collaboratively designing workshops, conferences, and special events; promoting CCN through the media and other outlets, and; evaluation of projects and project reporting.



Skills/attributes required:

- Knowledgeable of the issues, challenges, and opportunities facing rural Nova Scotia

- Ability to envision projects, partnerships, and methods for strengthening rural and coastal Nova Scotia

- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders and cultures

- Excellent facilitation skills

- Excellent speaking skills (for conference presentations and meetings)

- Proven proposal-writing and fundraising skills (Portfolio of successful outcomes welcome)

- Ability to supervise staff in a collaborative manner

- Positive thinker, optimistic personality

- Ability to juggle responsibilities and demands

- Organizational and fiscal management experience in a non-profit environment

- Own car and be able to travel when needed throughout Nova Scotia.

- Proficiency in computer use, including word processing and Internet skills.

- Graduate of a post-secondary educational institution preferred.



Start Date: January 3, 2011



Location: The office is located in New Glasgow. However, although we prefer candidates who can work out of our current office, we are open to discussing a home office arrangement.
