JOB POSTING -  WATER COORDINATOR



Water Coordinator - one year contract 

Coastal Issues Committee

Ecology Action Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia 



ORGANIZATION 



The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) established in 1971 is Nova Scotia's
largest and most active environmental organization. We work on
sustainable transportation, marine and coastal issues, wilderness and
urban issues, sustainable food production and alternative energy.



Representing one of the leading environmental organizations in Nova
Scotia, the EAC's Water Coordinator connects and builds the capacity of
various water stakeholders. Our goal is improved water resources
management through management at the watershed scale. We seek effective
participation in water policy development, policy recommendations that
reflect the expertise of existing local water groups, and to generate
and maintain government, media and public interest in water issues and
improved water management. 

 

During this contract term the Water Coordinator will be continuing and
strengthening the EAC's water program. This includes a continued
advocacy role in provincial water policy development and implementation,
communicating with community-based watershed groups, responding to media
and generating interest and support for improved water management
practices.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

 

*         Provide leadership for the EAC's freshwater program

*         Build a strong case in support of a provincial Water Act

*         Maintain and strengthen provincial and regional water networks

*         Communicate with municipalities, provincial government, and
water stakeholders

*         Organize workshops planning sessions, and other educational
events

*         Project management, including managing a budget, regular
reporting, and monitoring and evaluation

*          Media and other communications

*         Collaboration with the Groundwater and Coastal Coordinators 

*         Participate in general work of EAC and the Coastal Issues
Committee

 

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED



*         Demonstrated leadership skills

*         Knowledge of water resources, hydrology, watershed management
or related environmental science 

*         Knowledge of Nova Scotia water issues, especially the ongoing
Water Resources Strategy Development process

*         Experience in project management, including communications,
work-planning and budgeting 

*         Ability to communicate with many different stakeholders,
including government staff, environmental NGOs, municipal planners,
industry representatives, etc.

*         Previous experience building networks and coalitions

*         Media savvy with strong public speaking and writing skills 

*         Experience working in non-profit, volunteer-driven
organizations an asset

*         Familiarity with national water issues and water policy
initiatives n asset

*         Preference will be given to candidates completing a degree
and/or relevant experience in the fields of environmental science, water
resources, environmental law, planning or other related fields

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT



One year (November 2010 to October 2011)
37.5 hours per week @ $19.26/hr 

4 weeks paid vacation and a benefits package

 

Start date: November 1st 2010 

(Conditional upon confirmed funcing)
