Position: Coastal Climate Change Adaptation Researcher -- full-time

The Coastal Issues Committee of the Ecology Action Centre is seeking a bilingual (French/English) Researcher to work on a two year research project. This project will build new knowledge about how climate change will impact the fisheries and tourism sectors in Western Cape Breton. The project will develop ways to measure change, and new tools to help these sectors to find information, assess risk and plan for climate change.

The Researcher will be based in Cheticamp. Western Cape Breton. Their role will be to lead the community engagement and capacity building activities. The Research will also conduct participatory research about the issues and information needs related to climate change in Cheticamp. This position will collaborate with and report to the Research Coordinator. The Research will also work with local partners, including le Conseil Economic, Harbour Authority, and Gulf Aquatic Marine Station.

Project Overview

The project will develop two sector specific toolkits to assist the fisheries and tourism sectors in Acadian communities in the Maritimes identify and remove barriers related to climate change impacts. Two key local partners are involved in this work, the Conseil Economique de Cheticamp and the Gulf Aquatic Marine Station. The project will involve many local partners connected to expertise around the region, including universities and community colleges as well as non-profit, and provincial, and federal initiatives. The knowledge and experience gained from this project will help coastal, rural communities in the region, especially French speaking communities adapt to climate change.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement community-based engagement efforts in Cheticamp

• Community-based research on climate change impacts on fisheries and tourism

• Organize focus groups with fisheries and tourism sector to understand barriers, information needs, and potential adaptation tools

• Working with a regional network of research collaborators

• Organize community forums to present research results and pilot toolkits

• Assisting with the development and dissemination of toolkits

• Presentations and workshops to engage participation and to disseminate the research

• Reporting to and working with the Research Coordinator

• Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre

• Promote project via website, social media and local media

Required Skills & Experience

• Bilingual (French/English)

• Understanding of climate change and climate change adaptation

• Excellent understanding of the issues facing rural Nova Scotian coastal communities

• Deep understanding of Cheticamp and surrounding areas

• Excellent research skills including a grounding in participatory methods

• Proven community-development and capacity-building skills

• Proven communication skills, including presentations and workshops

• Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders

• Highly organized with an ability to manage multiple priorities

• Able to work independently

• Persistent and diplomatic with a team-oriented approach

• Relevant undergraduate or Maser degree or equivalent work experience

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Experience working in non-profit, volunteer-driven organizations

• Experience with writing for the web

• Experience with media

• Hands on experience in the tourism and/or fishing industries

Term: 23 May 2011 until 10 February 2013

Wage: $19 per hour for 30 hours per week; includes four weeks paid vacation and benefits

Recherchiste sur l'adaptation au changement du climat côtier -- temps plein

Le Comité des affaires côtières du Centre d'action écologique est à la recherche d'un chercheur bilingue (français-anglais) pour participer à un projet de recherche d'une durée de deux ans. Le projet vise à créer une base de connaissances sur la façon dont le changement climatique affectera les secteurs des pêches et du tourisme de l'Ouest du Cap Breton. Le projet portera sur le développement de moyens de mesurer le changement et de nouveaux outils pour aider les secteurs visés à recueillir des renseignements, à évaluer les risques et à planifier la gestion des impacts climatiques.

Le recherchiste sera sur place à Chéticamp, dans l'Ouest du Cap Breton. Il sera appelé à diriger les activités d'engagement communautaire et d'accroissement de capacité. Il conduira -- avec d'autres intervenants -- des recherches sur les problèmes et les besoins en information reliés au changement climatique à Chéticamp. Le titulaire du poste collaborera avec le Coordonnateur à la recherche et se rapportera à ce dernier. Il travaillera également avec des intervenants locaux, notamment le Conseil Économique, l'administration portuaire et le Gulf Aquatic Marine Station.

Survol du projet

Le projet vise à développer deux trousses d'information sectorielles pour aider les secteurs des pêches et du tourisme, dans les collectivités acadiennes des Maritimes, à identifier et réduire les obstacles à la compétitivité engendrés par le changement climatique. Deux intervenants clé sont engagés dans le projet, soit le Conseil économique de Chéticamp et le Gulf Aquatic Marine Station. Les participants incluront également plusieurs partenaires locaux associés à l'expertise résidant dans la région, notamment dans les universités, les collèges communautaires, ainsi que dans d'autres entités à but non lucratif, provinciales et fédérales. Les connaissances et l'expertise engendrés par le projet aideront les collectivités côtières et rurales de la région, particulièrement les communautés francophones, à s'adapter au changement climatique.
