Forestry Campaign Coordinator
Job Posting
The Forestry Campaign is a major initiative of the Ecology Action
Centre and has been speaking out for improvements to forestry policy
and practices in Nova Scotia since 2004. We are seeking a full-time
coordinator to direct this campaign. The campaign is presently
actively engaged in several key forestry management issues, including
the provincial Natural Resources Strategy, forest biomass energy, and
FSC forest certification. The campaign strives to achieve
ecosystem-based forestry practises;
a diversified forestry sector;
uptake of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification;
increased public participation in forestry decision-making;
responsible forest biomass energy policy; and
science-based forest management planning
The Forestry Program Coordinator will work closely with our Public
Lands Coordinator and with volunteers and other staff at the Ecology
Action Centre. The position reports to the Ecology Action Centre’s
Wilderness Committee.
Specifically, she or he will be responsible for
· developing and implementing the campaign’s overall strategy,
in association with volunteers and other staff;
· researching and recommending of science-based policy positions;
· coordinating a broad alliance of dozens of groups from a
variety of sectors, and a core steering committee consisting of staff
and volunteers from the Ecology Action Centre and other stakeholder
organizations;
· representing the campaign, Ecology Action Centre, and the
environmental sector in a variety of multi-stakeholder fora, e.g.,
the Board of Directors of the Association for Sustainable Forestry
and the Minister’s Forest Technical Advisory Committee;
· managing volunteer and contractor involvement, including
regional outreach, policy task groups, web site development, writing
of fact sheets and others;
· public presentations;
· government and media relations;
· ensuring that all communications are technically accurate and
appropriately nuanced for their target audiences;
· routine administrative tasks, e.g., maintenance of contact
and email lists, website updates, etc.;
· proposal writing and fundraising;
· reports to funders and supporters;
· financial management;
· participating in, and supporting, the overall work of the
Ecology Action Centre; and
· other duties as required.
Required Skills and Experience:
· a comprehensive knowledge of forests and forestry in Nova
Scotia;
· a track record in consensus building, teamwork, and
engagement with volunteers;
· an understanding of policy development processes;
· an ability to develop and implement a campaign strategy;
· excellent project management skills, including budget
management;
· superior communications skills;
· an ability to work effectively with government, media, and
community and industry groups;
· an ability to effectively represent the Centre's interests in
a wide variety of venues;
· flexibility, creativity and persistence.
Desirable Qualifications:
· academic qualifications in forestry, ecology, biology,
environmental planning, or similar disciplines.
Start Date: early April 2011
Salary: $44,500 annually; includes four weeks paid vacation and
benefits. This salary is subject to increase based on performance and
funding levels and in keeping with the EAC’s pay equity policy.
