JOIN US THIS FRIDAY: Protest planned against tar sands pipeline outside U.S.
consulate office in Halifax

(Halifax) - Members of the Sierra Club of Canada Atlantic Chapter and other
concerned citizens will be holding a peaceful lunchtime protest against the
tarsands pipeline on Friday, September 2 at noon outside the U.S. Consulate
office located in Purdy’s Wharf Tower II in downtown Halifax. The local
protest is being held in solidarity with the two-week Stop the Pipeline
sit-in that is currently taking place outside the White House in Washington
D.C.

Since August 20, over 700 people have been arrested outside the White House
for acts of non-violent civil disobedience to protest the proposed pipeline
that will carry oil from the Alberta tarsands to the Texas refineries and to
call upon President Obama to stop the project.

TransCanada’s proposed $7 billion Keystone XL pipeline will run
approximately 2,700 km from Fort McMurray, Alberta over several sensitive
ecosystems in the United States. Environmental groups believe that the
pipeline threatens human health, wildlife, wilderness and water sources,
such as the Ogallala aquifer. The pipeline will also lead to further
development of the tarsands. The tarsands account for 5% of Canada’s
greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for climate change, an amount that
will only increase with the creation of this pipeline. Unfortunately, the
pipeline has already received authorization in Canada. However, this
authorization is conditional on U.S. approval, which requires permission
from President Obama and he is expected to make a decision by the end of the
year.

At this Friday’s Halifax protest, Sierra Club will be sending a message to
the U.S. Consulate that Canadians are also against TransCanada’s Keystone XL
pipeline and the Alberta tarsands. Sierra Club will have banners, leaflets
and petitions. The environmental group is also raising public awareness for
the urgent need for government action on climate change and renewable
energy.
