Coastal Climate Change Adaptation Researcher   (Cheticamp)

 

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is seeking a Researcher to lead community research and engagement around climate change adaptation in the Cheticamp area. This project is focusing on how climate change will impact the fisheries and tourism sectors in Western Cape Breton. The researcher will work with the community to find ways to measure change, develop new tools to help the fisheries and tourism sectors to find information, assess risk and plan for climate change, and increase capacity for adaptation. 

 

The Researcher will be based in Cheticamp, Western Cape Breton.  This position will report to the Adaptation Research Coordinator, and collaborate with Coastal Coordinator and other Ecology Action Centre staff.   A key part of the Researcher's role is working with local partners, including  le Conseil Économic de Cheticamp,  Tourism committee, Harbour Authority, and  fishing organizations. 

 

Responsibilities

*         Developing and implementing community-based engagement efforts around climate change in  the Cheticamp area (from the park boundary to Cape LeMoine)

*         Community-based research  on climate change impacts on fisheries and tourism including organizing focus group discussions with the fisheries  and tourism sector

*         Building and working with a  local (ie. Cape Breton) and regional  network of partners, researchers and collaborators 

*         Organizing community forums, workshops, and learning events

*         Assisting with the development and dissemination of sector specific toolkits 

*         Reporting to the Adaptation Research Coordinator, and working with the Coastal Coordinator and other EAC staff

*         Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre

*         Promoting project via  website, social media and local media

 

Required Skills & Experience

*         Bilingual (French/English) strongly preferred

*         Deep understanding of Cheticamp and surrounding areas

*         Demonstrated community engagement and capacity-building skills 

*         Strong research skills including a grounding in participatory methods

*         Proven communication skills, including presentations and workshops

*         Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders

*         Highly organized with an ability to prioritize tasks

*         Able to work independently

*         Persistent and diplomatic and works well with a team

*         Relevant undergraduate or Master's degree or  equivalent work  experience 

*         Understanding of climate change and climate change adaptation is an asset 

 

Desirable Skills & Experience

*         Experience working in non-profit, volunteer-driven organizations

*         Experience with writing for the web

*         Experience with media including radio work

*         Hands on experience in the tourism and/or fishing industries

 


Term               16 April 2012 until Mid March 2013 

 

Wage                    $19 per hour for 28 hours per week

 

Location               Cheticamp, NS
