and the peoples of the world. Bring your banners and placards, bring your
music and statements, and most of all bring your friends to oppose this war
conference.

WHY THE PROMISES OF YESTERDAY ARE THE TAXES OF TODAY
with Dean and Weldon Professor Kim Brooks
Taxes matter. In this lecture, we'll look at why.
We promise it won't hurt (it may even be FUN)! And while we can't promise
that you'll be better at filing your tax return by the end of class
(sorry!), you will come away with a deeper understanding of our tax system
and possibly a sudden desire to debate critical tax policy issues with your
friends.
One important note: There will be time for questions and answers at the end
of each lecture, though the general nature of each topic means it is not the
place to look for individual legal advice.
When? Wednesday, Nov. 21 from 7- 8:30 pm.
Where? Weldon Law Building, Schulich School of Law, Room 104
Dalhousie University, 6061 University Ave.
Halifax, Nova Scotia

POSITIVE PUBLIC SECTOR SOLUTIONS TOWN HALL MEETINGS
As Nova Scotians, we often talk about the problems in health care. We debate
public vs private health care endlessly, while never really talking about
solutions. Not anymore.
The Nova Scotia Citizens' Health Care Network is pleased to launch our
Positive Public Sector Solutions tour. The Health Network is releasing a
platform of public sector solutions to problems in public health care. We
are encouraging all political parties in Nova Scotia to "steal" these ideas
and make them part of their next election platforms. Public health care is
too important to become a partisan issue.
The Health Network will be holding a series of town hall meetings around the
province. Details are below. The town hall meetings are open to the public
and light refreshments will be served.
Don't see your community on the list? Contact us and help organize a town
hall in your neighbourhood.

HAITI'S NEW DICTATORSHIP: THE COUP, THE EARTHQUAKE & THE UN OCCUPATION
Book launch with author Justin Podur
Friday, November 23
12:00-1:30 p.m.
Room 227, McNally Main Building,
St. Mary's University, 923 Robie St., Halifax

In 1804 Haiti became the world's first independent black Republic following
a slave revolution. 200 years later, ravaged by colonialism and violence, it
was placed under UN military occupation. Haiti's New Dictatorship charts the
country's recent history, from the 2004 coup against President Aristide to
the devastating 2010 earthquake, revealing a shocking story of abuse and
indifference by international forces. Justin Podur unmasks the grim reality
of a supposedly benign international occupation, arguing that the denial of
sovereignty is the fundamental cause of Haiti's problems. A powerful
challenge and wake-up call to the international NGO and development
community, Haiti's New Dictatorship is essential reading for anyone
concerned with justice in the global south and progressive development
policies.

About The Author: Justin Podur is Associate Professor of Environmental
Studies at York University, Canada. He is a writer on political conflicts
and social movements, and has reported from numerous countries including the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Haiti and Israel/Palestine. He
is a contributor to Empire's Ally: Canadian Foreign Policy and the War in
Afghanistan (2012).

Books will be available for sale. Organized by the Department of
International Development Studies, the Halifax Peace Coalition, and the
King's Students' Union. For more information, please visit

START SOMETHING BIG
Join us at a conference designed to engage and inspire young Nova Scotians
(ages 13-18) to take action on the environmental issues they are most
passionate about. "Start Something Big" is a student led conference for
environmental change. The event will be held on Saturday, November 17th,
2012, and will be a full day of inspiration, motivation, sharing and
starting new projects.
This event is designed to engage and inspire Nova Scotia youth (ages 13-18)
to take action on the environmental issues most pressing to them. A series
of motivating speakers will be talking on a range of topics to help spark a
dialogue between youth, teachers and community members about important
environmental issues. We hope that this day will provide grounds for youth
to identify priority environmental issues they wish to work on with the
support of the EAC. It will be a day to make connections toward taking
