JOSEPH HOWE SYMPOSIUM ¡°TRUST IN SOCIAL MEDIA¡±, NOVEMBER 3, 2012 The 9th
annual Joseph Howe Symposium, ¡°Trust in Social Media¡±, with Mathew Ingram
and Craig Silverman, will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, 10.00-1.30

The 2012 symposium will address the issues of engagement and transparency in
the networked age ¡ª how journalists can strengthen the relationship with
their audience.
Keynote speakers:
Mathew Ingram is a leading voice in the conversation shaping the future of
news. He was the  Globe and Mail¡¯s first blogger and its first online
communities editor. He is currently a senior writer with the San
Francisco-based blog network GigaOM and an influential commentator on
Twitter, with more than 37,000 followers. He will speak on: "Five Things Old
Media Can Learn From New Media."
Craig Silverman is one of North America¡¯s premier authorities on online
verification. He is an adjunct faculty member and editor of Regret the Error
at the Florida-based Poynter Institute for journalism training. He is a
partner in the online startup Spundge, a tool for social media curation. He
was also part of the team that launched the community-powered news network
OpenFile. His address will be ¡°Towards True Transparency.¡±
The two speakers will be followed by a panel discussion on best practices
for social media use involving CBC New Brunswick reporter Jacques Poitras,
Halifax Magazine Editor Trevor J. Adams and CBCNews.ca senior writer ¡ª and
current King¡¯s MJ student ¡ª Terra Tailleur.
 Jacques Poitras is the provincial affairs reporter for CBC News in New
Brunswick. He reports on the legislature for both radio and television, and
produces a political podcast called Spin Reduxit. Jacques also taught
journalism part-time for six years at St. Thomas University in Fredericton.
He is the author of three books, two of which were shortlisted for national
non-fiction awards. Jacques started his Twitter account in April 2009 and
since then has written more than 20,000 tweets and has accumulated about
4,000 followers.
A University of King's College alumnus (BJH '98), Trevor J. Adams is senior
editor with Metro Guide Publishing in Halifax, where he is lead editor on
several titles, including Halifax Magazine. This fall, Nimbus Publishing
released his first solo book, Long Shots: The Curious Story of the Four
Maritime Teams that Played for the Stanley Cup.
Terra Tailleur is senior writer at CBCNews.ca. She is a sessional instructor
King¡¯s and currently a student in the MJ program. 
The King¡¯s School of Journalism¡¯s Joseph Howe Symposium, which promotes
public interest in the issues surrounding writing and democracy, honours
Joseph Howe, the great Nova Scotia politician, journalist and reformer.

FREE PUBLIC TALK: IS DEMOCRACY IN DANGER?
NOVEMBER 6, 2012
7.00 PM, Alumni Hall, at the University of King's College, Halifax Canadian
philosopher and world-renowned intellectual Charles Taylor will deliver the
2012 Alex Fountain Memorial Lecture, 'Is democracy in danger?', on November
6, Taylor has spent most of his career at McGill University in Montreal. He
has written 15 books, including Sources of the Self, The Malaise of
Modernity, and A Secular Age, and numerous academic papers. He has also been
active in politics, running for Parliament as an NDP candidate. He lost four
times, including once to Pierre Trudeau in 1965.  Charles Taylor delivered
the CBC's Massey Lectures in 1991. More recently, he and Gerard Bouchard
have worked together on the Bouchard-Taylor Commission on reasonable
accommodation of religious minorities in Quebec. In 2007 Charles Taylor was
awarded the Templeton Prize for inquiry into the spiritual dimensions of

In 1804 Haiti became the world's first independent black Republic following
a slave revolution. 200 years later, ravaged by colonialism and violence, it
was placed under UN military occupation. Haiti's New Dictatorship charts the
country's recent history, from the 2004 coup against President Aristide to
the devastating 2010 earthquake, revealing a shocking story of abuse and
indifference by international forces. Justin Podur unmasks the grim reality
of a supposedly benign international occupation, arguing that the denial of
sovereignty is the fundamental cause of Haiti's problems. A powerful
challenge and wake-up call to the international NGO and development
community, Haiti's New Dictatorship is essential reading for anyone
concerned with justice in the global south and progressive development
policies.

About The Author
Justin Podur is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at York
University, Canada. He is a writer on political conflicts and social
movements, and has reported from numerous countries including the Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Haiti and Israel/Palestine. He is a
contributor to Empire's Ally: Canadian Foreign Policy and the War in
Afghanistan (2012).

In 1804 Haiti became the world's first independent black Republic following
a slave revolution. 200 years later, ravaged by colonialism and violence, it
was placed under UN military occupation. Haiti's New Dictatorship charts the
country's recent history, from the 2004 coup against President Aristide to
the devastating 2010 earthquake, revealing a shocking story of abuse and
indifference by international forces. Justin Podur unmasks the grim reality
of a supposedly benign international occupation, arguing that the denial of
sovereignty is the fundamental cause of Haiti's problems. A powerful
challenge and wake-up call to the international NGO and development
community, Haiti's New Dictatorship is essential reading for anyone
concerned with justice in the global south and progressive development
policies.

About The Author
Justin Podur is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at York
University, Canada. He is a writer on political conflicts and social
movements, and has reported from numerous countries including the Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Haiti and Israel/Palestine. He is a
contributor to Empire's Ally: Canadian Foreign Policy and the War in
Afghanistan (2012).

A panel discussion on the ethical considerations of the physical, economic,
social and cultural development of Nova Scotia is being held on November 28,
2012. The event, which will be co-organized by Acadia University, CCEPA and
CBERN Atlantic, will focus on education, planning, immigration and access to
service. This presentation provides an opportunity to define some of the
development challenges faced in Nova Scotia and through an ethical lens,
discuss opportunities and roadblocks to growth through public participation
in the conversation.

START SOMETHING BIG
Join us at a conference designed to engage and inspire young Nova Scotians
(ages 13-18) to take action on the environmental issues they are most
passionate about. ¡°Start Something Big¡± is a student led conference for
environmental change.  The event will be held on Saturday, November 17th,
2012, and will be a full day of inspiration, motivation, sharing and
starting new projects. 
This event is designed to engage and inspire Nova Scotia youth (ages 13-18)
to take action on the environmental issues most pressing to them. A series
of motivating speakers will be talking on a range of topics to help spark a
dialogue between youth, teachers and community members about important
environmental issues. We hope that this day will provide grounds for youth
to identify priority environmental issues they wish to work on with the
support of the EAC. It will be a day to make connections toward taking
action and making a difference.
