Dear Friends,

Our Spring session of *Talking Forests* continues in May and June.

*May 5, Time 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm*, Meet at the bridge on MacBeth Road for a
1pm departure into the woods.

*Enrichment Forestry* with Will Martin, Director of Forestry at Windhorse
Farm. Join Will on a walk through the beautiful FRS forest to explore the
practices of enrichment forestry and how they might apply to your own land
stewardship. Please dress appropriately for the weather and possibly wet
ground conditions. Please bring water and/or whatever refreshments you
might require to sustain you on a 3-hour wilderness walk.

*June 16, 1:00 pm*, 400 MacBeth Road (Redtail Nature Awareness Winter Camp)
*Cultivating Mushrooms* with David Boyle, mycologist and mushroom
enthusiast. Participants will learn about the essential roles fungi play in
nature by recycling nutrients, promoting healthy plant growth, controlling
pests, degrading pollutants, etc. They will also learn methods for growing
a variety of mushrooms species. They will inoculate and take home a log
that with proper care, will produce delicious shiitake.

We are pleased to announce that our inaugural Talking Forests presentation
with conservationist and wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft was video recorded
and is available for viewing on our Youtube channel:

The Friends of Redtail Society is a grass-roots, non-profit organization
formed to pursue a community-based solution to an industrial forest clear
cut that was scheduled to take place in an upland watershed in western
Pictou County. This 313 acres is now protected. The ecosystem is a
naturally regenerating forest that sustains a diversity of life and
contains many hallmark Acadian species—a forest type indigenous to Nova
Scotia and one of the most endangered in North America. We wish to
demonstrate a more respectful land ethic, which begins to redress decades
of extractive land use that has degraded forests and rural communities. The
Friends of Redtail Society recognizes the inherent value of all living
beings – flora and fauna – in the forest. Through our "Sheltering Forests"
campaign, we are raising funds for the process of reclaiming, re-visioning
and restoring our relationship with the forest.
