Position: Environmental Technician

The Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP) is a charitable non-profit organization with the mission to enhance the ecological health of the Annapolis River watershed through science, leadership and community engagement. Currently with a staff of 12, CARP is seeking an Environmental Technician to join our dynamic team.

Start date: August 6, 2013

End date: December 20, 2013

Remuneration: $16.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay and statutory benefits at 35 hours per week.

Eligibility: All candidates must be graduates of a post-secondary program such as environmental technology, environmental sciences or have 2 years related work experience. Preference may be given to candidates with work experience in environmental home programs or with experience in septic system or drinking water wells including interpretation of water quality results or tasks described within. Use of personal vehicle for field work travel is required and compensated according to prevailing policy (mileage rate $0.42/km). The candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Job Description/Responsibilities: The Environmental Technician works under the direction of the Administration Manager in a supportive and cooperative team environment. The Environmental Technician will be expected to complete duties directly related to CARP day to day activities as they related to the Environmental Home Assessment program (EHAP) and Rural H2O home programs. The Environmental Technician is expected to conduct client-based field work as needed in various weather conditions and field conditions by visiting rural homes in Kings, Annapolis, Digby and Yarmouth Counties. The Environmental Technician will also be expected to spend time in the office preparing educational material, entering data, conducting follow up calls and conducting reporting requirements as directed by the Administration Manager. The position is based out of CARP's office at 314 St. George St., Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia and all staff report in person to the office on a daily basis.

Specific tasks can include:
• Implement Rural H2O and EHAP programs following principles of community-based social marketing at the homes of rural clients, including septic system, drinking water well and storm water best management practices and incentives as required in CARP's contractual agreements.
• Strong understanding and education on hydrological cycle, drinking water pollution, drinking water and septic system maintenance, interpretation of drinking water analytical results.
• Promotion and delivery of educational information and outreach materials, press releases and project summaries on the Rural H2O and EHAP programs as required.
• Participate in training session(s) and meetings with funder.
• Participate in project meetings with peers and supervisor, monthly staff meetings, team building exercises and prepare monthly written updates and quarterly live updates for the Executive Director.
• Travel to Kings, Annapolis, Digby and Yarmouth Counties in the delivery of the program. Note - use of personal vehicle is required and compensated per existing CARP policy.
• Collaborative relationship with project funders.
• Purchasing and requisition of equipment and supplies required for the program.
• Distribution and some installation of equipment and supplies required for the program.
• Other tasks as assigned from time to time from CARP management both in the field and in the office.
