INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Position: Climate Change Adaptation Intern
Type: full-time paid internship, 24 weeks (see below)
Organization: Eastern Charlotte Waterways www.ecwinc.org
Location: Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick

Position Summary:

Eastern Charlotte Waterways Inc. (ECW) is a not-for-profit environmental resource and research centre in southwestern New Brunswick. In partnership with the Government of Canada's Science Horizons Youth Internship Program, ECW is seeking candidates for a six-month temporary position. The successful candidate will assist with the development of community-based adaptive planning in response to climate change. The internship will be based at the ECW office in Blacks Harbour, NB.

Duties:
• Assist with the implementation of community vulnerability assessments of climate change effects in five Charlotte County, NB municipalities
• Complete and summarize a literature review on sustainable theory and the role of community governance in the development of climate change adaptation strategies
• Engage representatives from participating Charlotte County municipalities in the collection of historical information including community maps, emergency plan information, historical flood information, and aerial photography
• Identify and engage suitable candidates for a climate change adaptation working group in each of the participating municipalities
• Translate scientific and technical information provided by experts in to everyday language for use by the working groups
• Consult with other eNGOs to explore the feasibility of a provincial network of community-based sustainable development advisory councils
• Prepare a final report that will combining the information from the literature review, with the lessons learned during the implementation of the community vulnerability assessments, and the feasibility study, in a report that outlines a potential community governance strategy in New Brunswick
• Contribute to other ECW environmental projects when necessary
• Assist with ECW clerical tasks as directed

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience in stakeholder engagement
• Knowledge of the causes and effects of climate change
• Experience in organizing and executing public events
• Experience analyzing environmental policy
• Strong communication skills with a proven ability to present technical concepts
• Valid driver's license
• Fluency in both English and French

Mandatory Qualifications:
• Have graduated with a degree or diploma from a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institution or CEGEP. These may be privately or publicly funded institutions.
• Are not attending school.
• Are unemployed or under-employed (working in a position that requires less than a person's knowledge, skill or ability).
• Are not in receipt of Employment Insurance during the position.
• Are aged 30 years or under (at the commencement of the project).
• Are legally entitled to work in Canada (includes individuals who are Canadian citizens, those with permanent Canadian residency status, those with a valid Canadian work permit to work on a full time basis, or persons who have been granted refugee status in Canada).

Details:

The deadline to apply is 4:00PM ADT on July 26th, 2013.

The internship will begin on August 5th, 2013 and conclude on January 17th, 2014.

The salary for the internship is $14/hr for 37.5 hours/week over 24 weeks.
