EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Position: Mines & Communities Event Coordinator
Organization: Sierra Club Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter http://atlantic.sierraclub.ca
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Sierra Club Atlantic and Ecology Action Centre have been working to reduce the environmental impact of mines and quarries in Nova Scotia for almost a decade.

We have produced an overview report, On Solid Ground (http://atlantic.sierraclub.ca/en/mining), which summarizes environmental and community concerns for mining issues in Nova Scotia. We are now interested in bringing experts, community leaders and government departments together to begin to solve the problems and concerns highlighted in our report.

This position will involve working closely with staff engaged in mines and quarry issues to organize an engaging and productive 2-day conference.

Duties
• engage key stakeholders and constituents to participate in the conference
• organize logistics of two-day conference
• secure keynote speakers or workshop leaders
• develop two-day conference agenda and background materials
• facilitate two-day meeting on mines, quarries, environmental impacts, and land-use planning
• write conference report with consensus recommendations
• assist with fundraising & proposal writing

Qualifications
• education or experience in event planning
• Earth Sciences background
• inter-personal and communication skills
• must be outgoing and comfortable in speaking with people diverse variety of perspectives and backgrounds
• quick learner
• writing skills
• proposal writing an asset

Terms: 

Part-time Contract Position

Approximately 10 hours per week for 9 months, $17 / hour. Hours may change with workplan demands.

Timeline: mid-July 2013 - mid-March 2014
