Position: Woodland Trails and Native Tree Nursery Worker

The Deanery Project is a non-profit cooperative which operates a rural learning centre focused on the environment, art, and community development. Located 60 km east of Halifax on the Eastern Shore, the beautiful 25 acre property includes innovative, energy efficient buildings, woodland trails, fields, and ocean front.

The organization builds skills for healthy communities and a healthy environment by creating mentoring, workshop and research opportunities for Nova Scotians. The on-site community trails network is integral to this work. It is an inter-active resource for local families, eco tourists and community organizations to explore the region.
 
Tasks and responsibilities include (depending on experience of applicant):
Working closely with Deanery Project trail mentors to develop and maintain our 5 km of interpretive trails and related nursery/garden projects
Constructing brush fences in woodland areas for native tree nurseries
Creating interpretive signage, and opportunities for art installations, along the trails.
Researching plants and best practices for forest gardens on the Eastern Shore
Documenting edible and medicinal plants and trees on trails
Care and maintenance of gardening and trail tools
Participating in and assisting with special events as needed
Receiving training in safe work practices and safe tool use
Assisting in development of safety protocols associated with trails 
Education requirements: student must have been in school during 2013-14 and be planning to re-enter a post secondary program in the fall 2014. 
Experience required:

Interest in environmental issues, especially forests
Basic understanding of Nova Scotia’s forest ecology/tree identification
Independent, self motivated worker
Trail building experience an asset
Comfortable working both alone and in a team
Interest in environmental arts and volunteer experience are assets
Hourly Wage Rate: $10.40/hr.
Number of Weeks: 6            Number of Hours per Week: 30
Contract:  Early June to August 2014.
