INTERN / WORK-STAY OPPORTUNITY
Position: Sustainable Farm & Hostel Intern
Type: 4 month work-stay opportunity (shorter stays possible, see below)
Organization: The Lazy Farmer Hostel http://www.lazyfarmerhostel.ca
Location: Village of Gagetown, near Fredericton, New Brunswick
Small-scale sustainable organic farm & travelers hostel looking for an intern!
We are a small farm & travelers' hostel in a picturesque rural village in the Saint John River Valley. The Village of Gagetown is in New Brunswick, 35 min from Fredericton, an hour from Saint John, and just over an hour to Moncton. It's a quaint community that attracts a diversity of tourists. There is a restaurant, a pub, multiple pottery studios & artist shops, as well as a marina and 2 museums.
This position involves a very diverse set of learning opportunities, some of which may include:
Organic farming of all sorts from sowing seeds to garden maintenance (weeding, pest control, hoeing, composting, watering, etc.), harvesting, preserving, storing, and canning the fruits of our labour.
Farmers market: We attend the local farmers market every Sunday from 11-3pm selling vegetables, fruit, homemade granola, almond milk, etc.
Minor construction projects: possibly fence building, deck building, painting, hostel renovations, etc.
Animal care: we have ducks, chickens/roosters, goats, rabbits, and a dog... and you will learn proper care for all of them.
Sustainable living: cooking/baking from scratch, natural personal care, rainwater harvesting, etc
Hostel oddities: reservations, check-ins, room & hostel maintenance, cleaning/laundry, property maintenance, etc.
Other: chopping wood, property maintenance, fruit foraging & harvest, and anything else that might arise. You will also have ample opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Saint John River on your downtime. Kayaking, biking, swimming, etc are encouraged!
Your accommodations will be in the hostel (or possibly a separate camper or bunkhouse), and this may vary throughout the summer pending hostel reservations. We have 3 rooms for rent (1 bunk room and 2 private doubles... check out our website for more information http://www.lazyfarmerhostel.ca. You can also check out the Village of Gagetown website to see what else the Village has to offer, http://www.villageofgagetown.ca).
This is a 4 month work-stay opportunity. The work days generally go from 9-4ish depending on the time of the season, and we take snack/lunch/swimming breaks multiple times per day. The ideal candidate will arrive May 15th and stay until mid to late September. You will learn everything from soil prep to harvest and storage! We're looking for someone who is adaptable, wants to learn & be part of the process... experience is secondary to this. Travel and/or hosteling experience is an asset.
We are also accepting resumes/applications from those who may be interested in the opportunity but cannot stay the full 4 months. We will require short-term help (2 weeks) in May and potentially again in September. That said, priority will be given to those who can stay the full term.
How to Apply:
Please send your resume and a short email telling us about yourself, your experience, your travels, and anything else that might be interesting... to:
