The Joggins Fossil Institute (JFI) is a registered charitable organisation, which was developed to aid in the promotion and development of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs and to protect, conserve, present, and transmit to future generations the values of this wonderful place.

Hours per Week: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience

Summary of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Curator/Director, the Education and Outreach Manager (EOM) is responsible for the development, scheduling, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs for visitors to the Joggins Fossil Centre and Cliffs, as well as outreach programs and extension programs. The EOM develops and implements programming that will make the Joggins Fossil Cliffs "user friendly", meet market needs, and welcoming to broad audiences. The EOM develops educational materials to accompany exhibitions and provides input into the development of new and/or temporary exhibitions. As part of the JFI Management Team, the EOM may act as Duty Manager when required and may be the first point of contact for all interpretive staff. The EOM also contributes to Human Resources by helping to fund, recruit, and train interpretive teams.

Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Joggins Fossil Institute's Curator/Director, the EOM:
• Develops content of educational programs for visitors to the Joggins Fossil Centre, as well as outreach programs to schools and other institutions.
• Trains interpretive staff and may be the first point of contact for all interpretive staff.
• Develops and trains interpreters to lead all tours.
• Evaluates all tours and Interpreters.
• Acts as spokesperson for the Joggins Fossil Centre as required and respond written and oral inquires as applicable.
• Develops and implements programming that will make the Joggins Fossil Cliffs "user friendly", meet market needs, and welcoming to broad audiences.
• Develops and implements programming that will complement the current curriculum schedules of local school systems.
• Solicits and schedules events, tours, school programs and classroom visits.
• Designs and updates content for interpretive tours, community relations programs, and natural science research programs.
• Prepares educational materials for the Centre, including brochures, site maps, and field guides that are concise, inspiring, and easy to understand.
• Provides education and training materials for new and/or temporary exhibitions as needed.
• Develops budgets and writes grants (e.g. NSERC PromoScience).
• Supervises all programming administrative duties, including acquisition and screening of new programs.
• Develops infrastructures to support new projects within the Institute.
• Liaises with the Operations Manager on educational products for purchase in the Gift Shop.
• Coordinates Gallery/exhibit maintenance.
• Contributes to social media platforms for effective communication with the public.
• Designs and implements all signage for the Joggins Fossil Centre and Cliffs.
• Maintains membership on appropriate regional, national and international organizations.
• Assumes Duty Manager responsibilities during weekdays and weekends as required.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education: relevant Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2 years experience in interpretation and/or education; or preferably a Bachelor of Education; or 5-10 years relevant experience.

Languages: Fluency in English is required; French is an asset

Computer and Office Applications: Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet, general office equipment: photocopier, facsimile, etc

Experience:
• Proven ability to deliver high quality educational or cultural public programming
• Experience supervising staff
• Experience developing and working within a budget

Personal characteristics:
• Creative, adaptable, team player with excellent organizational and time
management skills
• Thorough and detail-oriented
• Must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under pressure, with tight deadlines
• Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as requested
• Be bondable
• Pass a criminal record and a child abuse registry check
