Job Posting: Marine Policy Coordinator 

The Ecology Action Centre’s marine team works locally, nationally and internationally towards protecting the marine ecosystem and maintaining sustainable fisheries, which support vibrant coastal communities. We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic environmental campaigner with an interest in marine issues, who is looking for a dynamic and challenging job opportunity to make change in the world’s oceans.

The Coordinator will work on the EAC’s marine conservation campaigns to advocate for government policies to rebuild depleted fish stocks, promote recovery measures for marine fish species at risk, and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems. The job will consist of advocating for precautionary science-based management of the marine environment. The Coordinator will also participate in eco-certification assessments for wild fisheries, as well as stakeholder engagement on policy issues. The ideal candidate is passionate about making positive change for our oceans, comfortable with reviewing fisheries science documents and interpreting relevant policy links. Building relationships and being able to speak openly and honestly at public meetings is an asset.

The Marine Policy Coordinator duties include:
• Attend fisheries management meetings with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and advocate for precautionary science- based management.
• Lead on researching and compiling submissions to DFO on species at risk, fisheries rebuilding strategies, and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) stakeholder submissions.
• Work with the Marine Team’s communication staff on communication products and strategy.
• Gather and compile DFO science and management advice about key threats/issues toward marine fish and habitat.
• Research best practices in reducing bycatch and promoting stock health.
• Assist in organizing workshops and expert panels on marine stewardship best-practices.
• Conduct community outreach, event promotion, and general logistics as needed.
• Attend and participate in Marine Action Committee meetings and activities.
• Some evening and weekend work will be required.
• Support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre.
• Other duties as required.

Required skills and experience:
• Degree in environmental science or studies, public policy, marine biology or related field; advanced degree considered an asset.
• Some knowledge of fisheries, species at risk, ocean or marine sciences and/or environmental policy.
• More than five years of experience developing and conducting environmental campaigns.
• Ability to digest, synthesize and communicate scientific data to a variety of audiences.
• Experience working or volunteering with an environmental not-for-profit with an understanding of budgeting and charity laws.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Comfortable speaking in multi-stakeholder settings and to media through interviews.
• Able to facilitate large groups of volunteers and community members.
• Strong organizational skills, self-directed, as well as team player.

Eligible Applicants must:
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.

Terms of Employment:

37.5 hours per week

It is expected that this position will be for a term from January 5, 2016 through December 31, 2016 with the possibility of an extension pending the success of the program and funding sources.
