The Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG), is now accepting applications for an:
Outreach and Administrative Coordinator

Seeking: a passionate and energetic person to fill one of our two core coordinator positions in a busy social justice resource centre. Our core staff play a major role in all areas of the organization, and we're excited for this person to also bring vision for future growth!
ABOUT THE NOVA SCOTIA PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP
The Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG) is a resource centre based around social and environmental justice, within an anti-oppressive framework. NSPIRG is a student society at Dalhousie University and King's College, and our office is located in Room B24 of the Student Union Building at Dalhousie University. Our mandate is to link research to action and campus to community, within an anti-oppressive framework. We engage in campaigns, public education, and provide resources to the campus and community.
JOB DESCRIPTION: OUTREACH & ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR
Our two core staff are responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing much of the work of NSPIRG. Of the two staff, this position is responsible for outreach, volunteer engagement, and promotion.
The following responsibilities are common and shared between the Outreach and Administrative Coordinator and the Resource and Administrative Coordinator:
Ensure that all activities of NSPIRG are consistent with an anti-oppression mandate
Maintaining regular office hours and general office management, and maintaining a welcoming office space
Responsibility for about half of the NSPIRG core projects. These include: Rad Frosh, Underg(RAD) Journal, Research Projects, Reading Groups, Cinema Political Film Screenings, Workshops and Trainings, etc.
Serve as the main support person for half of NSPIRG's working groups
Attend and report at Board of Directors meetings
Monitor and respond to email, phone and in person correspondence
Assist the Board in the coordination of board strategic planning, general meetings, opt-out periods and hiring processes
The following responsibilities are to be fulfilled by the Outreach and Administrative Coordinator:
Develop and implement a plan for engaging volunteers at NSPIRG
Send out weekly online community newsletter and mailing list announcements
Publicize the work of NSPIRG through making and distributing: posters, leaflets, flyers, etc
Manage and update website and social media
Outreach to the student body at Dalhousie University and King's college
Develop outreach strategy to reach community groups, campaigns, and organizations, and build ongoing working relationships
Grant applications (most of our funding is not dependent on grants. However, we do apply for some grants throughout the year.)
Annual renewal of Joint Stocks membership and writing the annual report
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following are required for this position:
a demonstrated understanding of the principles and practice of anti-oppression, and how this related to coordinating a resource centre
experience with volunteer coordination
comfortable using a computer to produce documents and send emails
experience with grant or proposal writing
strong written and verbal communication skills
very comfortable doing promotion and outreach with university students
involvement in organizing around issues of social and environmental justice and grassroots community-led initiatives
comfortable making posters, leaflets, and flyers, updating social media, and updating websites
The following would be considered assets, but are not requirements:
a demonstrated understanding of consensus based decision-making
demonstrated experience planning and facilitating workshops
familiarity with Halifax community organizations, student organizations and the university environment
experience in running issue-based and goal-driven campaigns
demonstrated experience with event-planning and promotion
knowledge of non-profit organization administration
WAGE & HOURS
This position requires 33 hours per week, and pays $17 per hour. Regular daytime office hours and occasional flexible evening and weekend hours required. Contract is for one year, with the opportunity for renewal.
