Green Jobs Initiative (GJI) is an expansion of NRCan’s Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP), which is part of the ESDC Career Focus stream of the Youth Employment Strategy.

The Acadia Sustainability Office works with campus partners with to advance sustainability initiatives at the university.

Role

The energy projects coordinator reports to the Sustainability Coordinator and works closely with the Systems Engineering Manager and other members of physical plant services and partners. The intern will provide support to energy management, monitoring and renewable energy projects in order to reduce energy consumption on campus. This is an opportunity to help solve complex problems, gain valuable experience in energy management and building operations and to contribute to Acadia University’s sustainability goals.

Requirements

Applicants must be:
• Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive);
• A post-secondary graduate;
• A Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or granted refugee status in Canada;
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations;
• A first-time participant in the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) program

Responsibilities
• Conduct consultations with building managers on energy use in campus buildings and prepare recommendations report to improve building scheduling and energy efficiency.
• Work with sustainability coordinator and technicians to investigate and resolve issues in campus dashboard system
• Work with sustainability coordinator, engineering faculty and partners to facilitate technical upgrades and improvements of wind/solar demonstration project to promote renewable energy.
• Advise on current energy efficiency standards and practices.
• Collaborate with departments to identify, and recommend cost effective energy efficiency improvements.

Education and Experience

The following education and experience is required for the positon:
• Undergraduate degree in mechanical, electrical, computer or environmental engineering, with a minimum of two years of related work experience.
• Experience with facilities management, building science and/or energy management.
• Knowledge and interest of new and emerging trends in the area of energy efficiency.
• Experience with energy dashboard systems to engage building occupants.
• Knowledge and/or experience with renewable energy technology, specifically wind and solar.
• Experience conducting GHG emissions inventories.
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong experience in Microsoft Office, experience with learning new software platforms.

The following qualifications are desirable, but not required: Experience with energy audits, LEED, CEM or related energy efficiency credentials.
