About the Loaded Ladle:

The Loaded Ladle is a non-profit, open cooperative of students and community members dedicated to providing accessible, sustainable and locally sourced food to as many people as possible while politicizing food on campus. We aim to tackle the unjust global food system by providing a local alternative, encouraging creative resistance and engaging in food justice knowledge and resource sharing. The Loaded Ladle gives students and community members the option to determine what food they eat and how it is produced through participation in our non-hierarchical and consensus-based decision making process.

Compensation: $18 per hour at 10-15 hours per week

Start date: Monday May 15th (negotiable)

End date: August 31, 2017 with option for renewal to a part-time position from September 1, 2017 until April 30, 2018 for 15-20 hours a week

Job Description

The Solidarity Serving and Programming Coordinator is responsible for supporting kitchen and garden programming over the summer. A key component of this programming will be working with volunteers to facilitate on and off-campus solidarity servings (meals and snacks) for special events, rallies and meetings with groups who share the Loaded Ladle’s mandate on social and environmental justice. This position will work with all staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors of the Loaded Ladle. The Coordinator will be responsible for doing outreach to community organizations as well as responding to requests for solidarity servings. The Coordinator will also be responsible to design and facilitate workshops and programming, with the input from the Board and other staff.

The ideal person for this job has:

-Some experience working in kitchens and with volunteers

-Some background in event planning and workshop facilitation

-An interest and engagement in food politics and social justice movements

-Excitement to work in a non-hierarchical and cooperative structure

Food Safe Certification is required for this position and can be provided by the Loaded Ladle on hiring. Training for this position will also be provided.

Duties and Responsibilities (what your week might look like)

Programming (6-8 hours) Hours are based on having either 1 solidarity serving or 1 programming event per week.

I. Solidarity Servings 

The number of hours is not static and will change week-to-week. If no solidarity servings are planned, these hours should be used for outreach to groups, events and organizations with offers of support and solidarity. Solidarity Servings can and do occur in the evenings and on weekends.

1. Communication, coordination, and planning: responding to requests for solidarity servings over e-mail or in person and outreach to organizations and events that share the Loaded Ladle’s mandate for social and environmental justice (1 hour)

2. Food preparation: determining the menu based on needs of the group and availability of ingredients, and accommodating participation for all volunteers, using industrial kitchen equipment such as kettle pots, convection ovens and dishwashers (3 hours)

3. Food transport, event serving and attendance, clean-up: collaborating with volunteers from the organization and from the Ladle to transport the food to and from the event space if necessary. Heavy lifting or the delegation of heavy lifting is often required. Having your own car is not required. (4 hours)

II. Programming 

The hours will vary week to week based on what is planned. Having a position dedicated to programming is new for the Ladle. The person in this position will help build a vision for what this will look like in collaboration with the staff and board. The programming will also be designed according to the coordinator’s own skill-base and interests as well as the interests and needs of the community.

1. Food justice related program planning: this includes outreach to individuals in the community who may want to share skills and knowledge as well as to other organizations who could be interested in collaborating on workshops, panels, screenings or teach-ins. Supporting these participants in all steps leading to successful programming including workshop design, gathering materials and promotion of the event (2-4 hours)

2. Workshop facilitation: create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for participants to learn and share knowledge. Set-up and clean-up before and after an event. (4 hours)

Staff and Board, and DSU Communication (2 hours)

1. Occasional staff and board meetings to discuss upcoming servings and events, logistical needs etc.

2. Monitoring and responding to communication over e-mail and social media to maintain engagement with board members who are not in the city during the summer months

3. Communicating with DSU representatives and staff about kitchen use, cleaning supplies and larger maintenance tasks

4. Support and communication with summer students

Food Orders and Inventory (1 hour)

1. Communication with current suppliers and farmers; research into possible new local suppliers and farmers

2. Inventory and record keeping of current food stocks

3. Facilitating and participating in market pick-up of fresh produce, on Sat mornings at the Brewery Market (or figuring out a different arrangement if Sat mornings don’t work).

Kitchen Organization and Cleaning (0.5 hour)

1. Regular deep cleaning and organizing of the kitchen as well as monitoring of proper functioning of kitchen equipment

Special Projects and Sundry Duties (1 hour)

1. Special projects as they arise; collaboration with co-workers and volunteers

Responsibilities of all Loaded Ladle Staff:

1. Attending weekly open meetings and board meetings as needed

2. Being welcoming, friendly, and supportive for all volunteers and staff in Loaded Ladle spaces

3. Attending training: anti-oppression (annual), meeting facilitation (annual), Food Safe certification (as needed) and others, as needed

4. Working as a part of a co-operative; answering to and working with a volunteer board of directors

This position will continue in the fall as a part-time position and the person in this summer position may have the option to continue their work in that capacity with additional duties supporting the Kitchen and Volunteer-Serving Coordinator in regular on campus servings.
