Position: Mobile Food Market Assistant (18 week contract position)

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
About the Mobile Food Market
After a successful 21-week pilot, the Mobile Food Market (MFM) will be launching a second 16-week winter pilot that will continue to sell fresh and affordable vegetables and fruit in communities in the Halifax region that have limited access to healthy food. The project is a partnership between Partners for Care, Public Health (Nova Scotia Health Authority, Central Zone), the Mayors Office, Ecology Action Centre, Halifax Transit, and other local community organizations and businesses.
The role of the MFM assistant will be to work with the MFM coordinator, project advisory committee and local host teams to implement the mobile market in each pilot community. Total length of the pilot project is 16 weeks, however the assistant will have 1.5 weeks prior to the launch date for training, and 1/2 week post pilot for wrap up and reporting.
Mobile Food Market Assistant Duties Include:
Facilitating project coordination duties, including but not limited to volunteer training and management, record keeping, and implementation of evaluation activities including program tracking and reporting;
Overseeing operational logistics of the mobile market, including:
Ensuring that mobile market services operate in a safe and effective manner, and that the values of the mobile market are accurately represented in on-going activities;
Coordinating specific aspects of market preparation and roll out including transporting food, organizing storage, weighing/bagging, display and retail activities,and implementation of market waste plan; and
Coordinating set-up and tear town of mobile market infrastructure, and driving the van.
Building and maintaining strong working relationships with the mobile market local host teams;
Working with the MFM coordinator to maintain up to date financial and sales records;
Work with the MFM coordinator to implement the evaluation plan;
Ensure that strong, ongoing communication is maintained between local host sites and the MFM coordinator;
Additional duties as required.
Interested candidates should possess the following skills and experience:
Project or event coordination experience, including but not limited to ensuring deliverables are met and fostering coordination amongst team members;
Experience managing volunteers;
Demonstrated ability to foster partnerships and support community engagement processes;
Passion and knowledge of community food security;
Creative problem solving skills;
Strong organizational skills, friendly and patient;
Detail oriented, with the ability to keep clear and accurate records;
Strong communication skills (written and verbal);
Willingness to learn, experiment and adapt;
Leadership skills and self-direction;
Must have a valid class 5 drivers license, clean driving abstract and regular access to a reliable vehicle.
The following skills are also an asset:
Experience working with vulnerable populations
Customer service and cash handling experience
Terms of Employment
Start: Mid February 2017
End: 18 weeks from start date
10 - 20 hours per week @ $15.00/hour contingent upon funding
Hours: To be determined. Some flexibility with hours will be required (including some weekday and Saturday hours).
Location: This position will be based in Halifax, with the option to work from home or the Victoria General Hospital (Centennial Building).
