The Medway Community Forest Cooperative (MCFC) is a community co-op that operates to support local economies through sustainable and ecologically-based forest management. The MCFC is centered in the development of innovative, multi-value forestry operations by managing our 15,000-hectare land base for the environmental, recreational, cultural and economic values that exist in rural southwestern Nova Scotia. As the first community forest in Nova Scotia, the MCFC has entered its third and final year as a pilot project with the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. In 2017, the focus of the coop will be to establish its long-term focus, and develop new management streams including non-timber forest products and recreation, and foster significant community support and engagement.

The MCFC is seeking applications for a summer student to fill the position of Community Forest Intern. The successful applicant must be a current post-secondary student that will be returning to study in fall 2017. The position will be approximately 15 weeks, from May 8 to August 18, 2017 and based in Caledonia, Queens Co. Nova Scotia. Affordable accommodations are available at the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute at the employee’s expense.

Job Description:

The Community Forest Intern will assist the MCFC General Manager in the everyday operations of the coop and the development of alternative means to forest management in Nova Scotia.

Duties will include:
• Silviculture monitoring and auditing
• Assisting with pre-treatment assessments and timber cruising
• Carbon inventory data collection and mapping
• Wildlife and environmental monitoring
• Assisting with watercourse reclamation and remediation
• Assisting with non-timber forest products and wild food harvesting
• Planning and organizing public outreach and community events
• Recreational trail layout and planning
• Social media and website communication
• Participation on MCFC committees (outreach, operations, firewood and business development)

Requirements for Employment:
• Keen interest in multi-value forestry and community-based resource management
• Ability to live and work in a rural setting
• Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and in varying terrain
• Experience with forestry field work
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Highly motivated, creative and analytical thinker
• Experience and proficiency using GIS (ArcMap), Microsoft Excel, GPS and field data collection tools.
• A valid Driver’s License and satisfactory Driver’s Abstract, access to reliable woods vehicle an asset.
• Recent safety training in Wilderness First Aid, WHMIS, Nova Scotia Forest Ecosystem Classification and Nova Scotia Watercourse Assessment an asset.
• Current enrollment in a forestry, natural resources or related program at a post-secondary level (college, university or graduate level studies) and returning to study in fall 2017.

Terms of Employment:
• Full-time (35 hrs/week), within the period of May 8, 2017 - August 18, 2017
• $15.00/hour
• Compensation for use of personal vehicle if applicable.

The successful candidate will gain experience with Nova Scotia’s first community forest project. Willingness to learn, good work ethic and a positive attitude are essential. The MCFC is committed to building a team that is focused on building innovative new approaches to forestry in Nova Scotia.
