Position: Assistant Gardener - Seasonal

Seasonal work, May to October, 35/week, $14/hour 

Job Description

The Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens occupy more than six acres on the campus of Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Since September 2002, the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens have provided a captivating environment for the investigation of native flora of the Acadian Forest Region.

We are seeking an Assistant Gardener to join our small team. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about plants, people and the environment, creative in problem solving and enjoys working outdoors in all weather.

Work will consist of general gardening and maintenance for outdoor gardens, greenhouse and woodland trails. Specific tasks to include: mowing, weeding, fertilizing, dethatching, aerating, mulching, raking, watering, pruning, planting, cleaning and tool maintenance. Assistant Gardener will also be asked to help with special events, leading educational tours as well as infrastructure and equipment maintenance.

Post-secondary education in Biology, Environmental Science or Horticulture preferred. Minimum of 2 years previous landscaping is required; experience with turf management would be an asset. Experience with power tools and irrigation systems preferred. Knowledge of plants and habitats found in the Acadian Forest Region preferred. Certification in First Aid and a driver’s license required. Successful applicants will be required to supply personal safety boots, work gloves and rain gear.
