Position: Hawk Counter
Organization: Nature NB / Saint John Naturalists' Club
Location: Charlotte County, west of Saint John, New Brunswick

The Saint John Naturalists’ Club and Nature New Brunswick seek to immediately enter into a contact arrangement with an experienced birder/hawk counter from approximately September 1 to mid-October 2017. Applicant will be responsible for collecting data on hawk migration occurring amongst the Bay of Fundy’s Western Isles. This individual must be a self starter capable of operating on his or her own.

Duties include:
• Under the direction of the Greenlaw Mountain Hawk Watch’s Official Counter, conduct counts of raptors in migration on days when migration is likely to occur (favourable winds with a relative lack of precipitation).
• Report observations to the Official Counter on a daily basis
• Interact with members of the public relative to the project.

Requirements
• Significant birding experience
• Ability to differentiate between distant raptors and other species of birds (e.g.: gulls) in flight. Preference will be given to applicants having some hawk watch experience and/or the ability to identify raptor species in flight
• Available seven days a week (days off determined by weather conditions)
• Ability to work in Canada (legal resident with work papers or citizenship)
• Drivers license and motor vehicle
• Personal computer or other devise capable of scanning and emailing data sheets (a daily task)

Remuneration and costs:
• Contract rate: $16.00/hour
• For a non-Charlotte County based individual: local motel or private rental accommodations
• Mileage from accommodations to work site @ $.39/km
