Position: Garden Assistant
Type: summer job / summer student position
Organization: Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Working at the Urban Farm Museum in Spryfield is a great opportunity to work outdoors, helping to maintain the vegetable gardens and assist with teaching learners of all ages how to grow a garden, as well as learn a variety of practical skills.

The Urban Farm is located on Rockingstone Road. Entry is through the farm gate, across from Beachstone Drive.

Garden Assistant

The Garden Assistant works under the supervision of the Garden Coordinator.

Duties of the Garden Assistant fall into three categories: (1) Garden maintenance; (2) Facilitating volunteer activities; (3) Assisting with Market Garden sales.

The skills required are in manual work, communication and organization

Examples of manual skills
• working with hand tools for large and small jobs, such as digging, hoeing, seeding and weeding, clipping shrubs and trees, repairs to fences and gates
• lifting weights up to 10 kg in and out of wheelbarrows
• constructing trellises for growing peas and beans

Examples of communication
• focusing on the positive
• welcoming plot holders, visitors, volunteers
• providing clear directions to volunteers regarding tasks to be completed and reviewing the policies outlined in the plot holder agreement
• showing genuine appreciation to volunteers regarding assistance they provide
• introducing and explaining topics in the Come Grow With Us curriculum
• helping gardeners integrate the learning into their garden plot

Examples of organization skills
• assessing what crops are ready for eating and harvesting them
• measuring or weighing produce and calculating cost to the customer
• handling cash, making change and keeping good records
• maintaining organization of tools and supplies in the shed
• being mindful of security, locking gates and the shed

Qualifications and eligibility
• Age 15 to 30 years
• Full-time student in preceding and upcoming academic years
• Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or refugee

Work Situation
• Outdoors, with the exception of rainy days, when there is work indoors
• Sturdy footwear and protective clothing required
• Ability to lift at least 10 kg from ground into a wheelbarrow
• Employment period is for 10-14 weeks in June, July and August

Reporting

The Garden Assistant reports to the Farm Coordinator, and all activities under both these jobs are supervised by two representatives of the Farm-Field Committee who report to the Board of the Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield.

Compensation
• Approximately: $12/hour. 350 hours total; 35 hours per week, starting in June 2018.
