Position: Junior Data Analyst
Organization: Atlantic Water Network
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Atlantic Water Network (AWN) is seeking a Junior Data Analyst to assist in a growing initiative in Atlantic Canada. The Junior Data Analyst will help onboard data stewards in Atlantic Canada to Atlantic DataStream, an open access datahub. Data Stewards are AWNs community-partners collecting water quality data through their local monitoring programs in Atlantic Canada. These groups vary in size, history and overall goals, but they all are passionate about their local waterways. Atlantic Water Network is a growing organization and is the regional lead for Atlantic DataStream, in partnership with The Gordon Foundation.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Assist Data Stewards in uploading their data to Atlantic DataStream
Provide technical assistance to data stewards (help in excel spreadsheets, experience troubleshooting in excel and Google Sheets, help pivoting data into DataStream upload format)
Assist in the digitization of Historical Datasets
Provide technical workshops in person or through webinars to explain processes including uploading data and simple analysis of water quality data
Perform a scan of datasets throughout Atlantic Canada and with input from Atlantic Water Network partners develop a roadmap for making these datasets available on Atlantic DataStream
Survey users of Atlantic DataStream what data is wanted or valued in the region?
Occasional support to other DataStream regions (Lake Winnipeg and Mackenzie River Basin)
The time of the Junior Data Analyst will be broken up in: 50% formatting or assisting data stewards in formatting datasets; 20% assisting and training community partners in data upload processes; 20% developing training material for data analysis for community partners 10% scanning available datasets within the region, prioritizing upload process. This position will be based at the Atlantic Water Networks office in Halifax NS, some travel to Atlantic Canadian partners may be required.
Qualifications:
College or university graduate with a degree from a STEM related field (Environmental Science, Biology, Water Sciences, Environmental Engineering, etc.)
Highly proficient in Excel and Google Sheets including advanced formulas, pivot tables, macros and scripting, some experience working with R
Experience with historical (non-digitized) datasets
Experience performing QA/QC on large datasets
Strong Communication skills can easily explain technical jargon to the public through Webinars, videos etc., can take feedback from both management and public
Self-motivated, curious and adaptable, able to work as an individual and collaboratively as part of a team
Ability to prioritize workload
Knowledge of Water Quality Monitoring methods, data etc.
Excellent organization, communication and presentation skills
Problem solving ability
Public Speaking Experience (conferences, presentations, webinars etc.)
Experience in Community Outreach
Bilingualism considered an asset (working proficiency)
