ORGANIZATION

The Ecology Action Centre is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community, and are a strong voice and watchdog for our environment. We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness. We take a holistic approach to the environment and our economy to create a just and sustainable society.

EAC’s Energy Action Team inspires Nova Scotians to prosper in a future that is free of fossil fuels, where energy is used as efficiently as possible. Through education, consultation and advocacy with the public and government, we work for a just transition into this future.

POSITION:

We are seeking a full-time Energy Campaigner, who will be responsible for strengthening and helping to coordinate EAC’s work in energy policy advocacy, research and campaigning. The Energy Campaigner will also support the coordination of the Energy Action Team’s work more generally. The successful candidate will work closely with the Energy Campaign Coordinator, the Energy Conservation Coordinator, and Energy Action Team volunteers, and will report directly to the Energy Campaign Coordinator.

The Energy Campaigner will principally work to support a number of campaigns on climate action and climate justice in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada, with a focus on the justice-based transition to a zero-carbon economy.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Help to coordinate the EAC’s campaigns for ambitious climate action targets for 2030, including building a network of people working toward climate justice in Nova Scotia;
• Support the EAC’s work and campaigns on Nova Scotia’s Cap and Trade system;
• Coordination of campaigns and initiatives to keep fossil fuels in the ground, and work against projects such as offshore oil and gas, LNG, fracking, coal mining and other projects;
• Event planning, logistical responsibilities and organizational support for public meetings, events and mobilization;
• Work to build and strengthen relationships with Nova Scotian communities to support their existing needs, research and campaigns, with a focus on workers, Mi’kmaq communities, African Nova-Scotian communities, and rural communities;
• Participate in stakeholder consultations, regulatory proceedings and advisory boards;
• Participate in the collective work of the Energy Action Team, including:
• Coordination and project management of internal communications, meetings and deliverables;
• Report-writing, research and support for various projects, creating content for media, social media, and internal and external publications;
• Identifying and supporting the pursuit of fundraising opportunities;
• Meeting with regional, national, and international organizations and networks;
• Supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre; and
• Other duties as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 
• At least two years of experience in organizing, planning and/or supporting advocacy campaigns in either a professional or volunteer capacity.
• Experience bringing people together, leading or supporting community events or workshops, and general event planning.
• Working knowledge of climate change and familiarity of climate change policy in Nova Scotia.
• Strong interest in the greater effects of climate change on different communities and peoples based on gender, race, class, geography, etc. and the relationship between climate change and social justice.
• Interest in and knowledge of environmental matters related to community capacity, health, well-being, and environmental racism.
• Interest in and knowledge of energy systems and how they effect, benefit or harm people at the community level.
• Experience working with Aboriginal communities, African-Canadian communities or other communities of colour to support their operations, projects, events or political endeavours.
• Proven skills in reviewing and compiling research on topics of interest, and excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Project management skills: ability to work independently and as part of a team, effectively manage multiple tasks, and use time efficiently.
• Computer literacy in MS Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Available some evenings and weekends and willing to travel.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 
• Experience with communications, social media and traditional mass media, and working with web-based platforms.
• Experience working for a non-profit organization, First Nation Band, co-op, labour organization, or community enterprise.
• Experience working with volunteers.
• Experience working with governments on policy matters.
• Experience with public speaking.
• Class 5 Driver’s License an asset.
• Education or training in social sciences, community organizing, natural sciences or public policy.
• Experience managing projects and budgets, and developing funding proposals.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

30 hours/week at $20.00 - $23.00/hour, commensurate with experience; with possibility to increase hours to 37.5/week

indefinite term contract

4 weeks of paid vacation

eligible for cost-shared benefits plan after 3 months.

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia in EAC’s newly renovated, highly energy efficient office.
