About the Centre and the Community

The Bayer’s Westwood Family Resource Centre (BWFRC) is located in West-End Halifax in the region's largest public housing neighborhood. Bayer’s Westwood is a low-income community – with a diverse and tight knit population of residents. Since 1991 the BWFRC has been working to create a secure, supportive learning space for all community members. They provide opportunities to share and to build confidence and trust; while working together to create a stronger, healthier community. BWFRC offers programs ranging from pre-natal support, day-care, parent counseling, service referrals, new-comer services, a food and clothing pantry, regular food and garden skills workshops, as well as stewarding the HUGS Community Garden. The HUGS Community Garden was started in 2010 by residents interested in food security issues. The garden is a popular feature of the neighborhood; creating a vibrant community hub for residents of all walks of life and a space to grow fresh healthy food.

Overview of the Project

The HUGS Community Garden is located in the Bayer’s Westwood community – Halifax’s largest public housing neighborhood. The community boasts a rich diversity of residents from many walks of life and cultural backgrounds. Bayer’s Westwood is a tight knit and active neighborhood. Despite its wealth of human and community resources, many residents struggle with poverty and food insecurity. The garden represents an important social and green-space where residents can grow their own food, meet their neighbors and work together on a project that both beautifies and strengthens their community.

The role of the Food and Garden Program Coordinator (FGPC) will be to manage the HUGS Community Garden project and all of its related community and food security functions. The position requires a candidate who has demonstrated experience in farming and/or gardening, community garden coordination, experience working in a community development setting – with diverse and/or marginalized populations. The position involves considerable physical labour, coordination of volunteers and committees, scheduling and promotion, community education and workshop facilitation, events coordination, as well as working with stakeholders in the community.

Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in farming and/or gardening and/or community garden coordination.
• Familiarity with healthy seasonal cooking, food preparation, handling, preserving, storage an asset.
• Experience working with marginalized populations, New Canadians, low-income adults and seniors.
• Academic and/or work experience with non-profit and/or environmental groups on issues surrounding social justice, food security and sustainability.
• Experience building and managing budgets, allocating funds, purchasing materials, tracking and reporting.
• Experience working with groups of community members and/or volunteers in a community development setting.
• Patient, tactful, empathetic, flexible, willing to learn from others from different backgrounds.

Responsibilities

The FGPC will conduct all pre-planning and garden start-up meetings and activities, facilitate the garden grand opening and corresponding planting parties, allocate plots to returning and new gardeners, manage and maintain the garden; coordinate and supervise volunteers and residents. They will plan and manage 10 plots to grow food that will be used in BWFRC meals and programs. This involves ongoing harvesting, food-handling, storage. All the while, the FGPC will manage the social dynamics of the garden which include answering questions, fielding complaints and concerns, managing special requests, contacting gardeners among others.

More broadly the position is intended to work towards the goal of increasing community food security and resiliency; creating space for cross-cultural and intergenerational learning; encouraging active living and recreation for children, youth adults and seniors; promoting neighborhood greenspace; creating income and employment opportunities; and improving the public image of Bayer’s Westwood by involving residents in the transformation of their community.

Job Details

This is a part-time 6-7 month contract position from Mid-April to Mid-October. 20 hours per week @ $20.00 per hour. Most work takes place in the garden. The successful candidate will be responsible to manage their hours over the course of the contract period, ensuring that they meet, and do not exceed their total hours. Must be available to work some evenings and weekends.
