ORGANIZATION

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community and are a strong voice and watchdog for our environment. We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness. We take a holistic approach to the environment and our economy to create a just and sustainable society.

The Ecology Action Centre’s marine team works locally, nationally and internationally towards protecting the marine ecosystem and maintaining sustainable fisheries, which support vibrant coastal communities.

POSITION

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic environmental campaigner with expertise in marine issues, who is looking for a dynamic and challenging job opportunity to make change in the world’s oceans.

The Marine Protection and Planning Coordinator will lead EAC in all aspects of a campaign to support the designation 10% of Canada’s ocean as marine protected areas and to protect sensitive benthic areas from harmful fishing practices. Additionally, the Coordinator will co-lead and engage in long term planning of EAC’s marine program, including fundraising and partnership building. The Coordinator will report to EAC’s staff directors.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Lead the EAC’s marine protection and planning program including strategic direction, supervision of staff, and coalition work.
• Engage on national and international level marine protection and planning work. Participate, as required, in various United Nations and international meetings pertaining to the conservation of biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction.
• Work in collaboration with other organizations on ensuring that Canada reaches and exceeds the marine conservation target of 10% protection by 2020.
• Attend science and management meetings pertaining to protected areas and fisheries closures and advocate for EAC positions.
• Work with EAC’s communications team on communication products and strategy.
• Organize workshops and expert panels on marine protected areas and sensitive benthic areas.
• Attend, as needed, local community meetings to help community members understand protected areas and to garner their support.
• Supervise research projects on fisheries and marine protection as needed.
• Participate, as required, in various United Nations and international meetings pertaining to the conservation of biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction.
• Co-lead strategic oversight and partnership development, team support, and fundraising efforts.
• Direct community outreach, event promotion, and general logistics as needed.
• Work with and support interns and volunteer teams.
• Support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre.
• Other duties as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Advanced degree in environmental science or studies, public policy, marine biology or related field including marine industry or Indigenous government.
• At least five years of experience developing and conducting environmental campaigns.
• In-depth knowledge of marine policy, marine protected areas and ocean uses.
• Experience in working with decision-makers and shaping public policy at the provincial and national level.
• Fundraising experience, including grant writing and other partnership building.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to digest, synthesize and communicate scientific data to a variety of audiences.
• Comfortable speaking in multi-stakeholder settings and to media through interviews.
• Experience leading teams, and supervising staff and volunteers.
• Able to facilitate large groups of volunteers and community members.
• Strong organizational skills, self-directed, as well as team player.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Experience in a non-profit environment
• Experience with budget management

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time (37.5 hours per week) for an indefinite term; 4 weeks of paid vacation and a cost-shared benefits plan. Compensation commensurate with experience in the range of $23.50-$27/hour.

Interviews will take place between June 14-19 and the successful candidate will ideally start soon after.

Hours: Monday to Friday – flexible hours. Some evening and weekend work will be required, as will some travel.

Location: This position will be based at EAC’s office, 2705 Fern Lane, Halifax.
