Position Summary

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) are sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity, identified through the application of a global KBA Standard (2016) though national coordination bodies. The KBA standard is being fostered globally by the KBA Partnership. WCS Canada has played a leadership role in both developing the new KBA standard and introducing it to Canada. Based on this, WCS Canada, in partnership with other organization, is organizing a two-year project to identify and implement KBAs in Canada. A KBA Coalition is being established to implement the standard in Canada; the Secretariat will be housed within WCS Canada. Environment and Climate Change Canada is a key government partner in the KBA coalition and a major sponsor of the initiative.

The Canada KBA Coordinator will serve as the manager of the KBA Secretariat, responsible for developing, planning and overseeing the implementation of Secretariat activities and managing its financial and human resources. In close collaboration with the Chair of the KBA Coalition and the KBA-focused staff members of the KBA partners, this two-year term position will facilitate and support the KBA Coalition in Canada to implement a visionary and ambitious programme to mobilize resources and expertise to further identify and map Key Biodiversity Areas in Canada, as a vital tool to assist in the conservation of biodiversity.

Position Objectives
• To provide management support and leadership for the KBA Secretariat and the KBA Coalition in Canada;
• To facilitate the process of KBA identification in Canada, in collaboration with taxon and biodiversity experts; and in partnership with other organizations.
• To liaise with the KBA global and Canadian database operators and the global KBA Secretariat and Partnership;
• To encourage and facilitate the active involvement of KBA Coalition members in helping to identify KBAs and raise awareness about them in Canada; and
• To act as a public face for KBAs in Canada, raising awareness of the identification process and the value of KBAs for conservation.

Principal Responsibilities
• Coordinate meetings and collaborative activities of the Canadian KBA Coalition;
• Gather relevant biodiversity datasets and conduct analyses of biodiversity and other data in Canada and identify preliminary KBAs;
• Establish and maintain a network of biodiversity experts in Canada, including indigenous knowledge holders;
• Design, organize, and conduct advance preparation for a series of 5-6 expert regional workshops to identify and delineate KBAs in Canada;
• Coordinate contracts associated with execution of special projects and workshops;
• Manage a workplan and budget for the KBA Coalition. Budget management will require coordination with the WCS Canada Director of Finance and Operations;
• Contribute to program fundraising, including proposal writing and grant reporting, as well as identifying funding opportunities.
• Communicate about KBAs where there are opportunities, and help maintain relevant websites;
• Liaise with database managers for Canada and global KBA databases; and
• Link with the international governance process and submit Canadian KBAs for approval and adoption by the KBA global partnership.

Desired Qualifications
• A post-graduate degree in biodiversity conservation or other related field of study;
• Reasonably broad knowledge of Canada's flora and fauna;
• Excellent analytical skills, with particular experience using GIS and other tools for spatial data management and analysis;
• Ability to assimilate and effectively analyze large amount of material;
• Superior networking skills and experience managing and facilitating dispersed teams and building partnerships around common agendas;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate about biodiversity-related science and conservation topics compellingly to a wide range of audiences;
• Ability to work both independently and within a team on multiple projects concurrently;
• Excellent organizational and project management skills;
• Experience working in a cross-cultural setting with indigenous governments or communities and/or understanding of diverse Indigenous histories, worldviews, and Indigenous knowledge systems;
• Inspirational and collaborative leadership style;
• Fluent in English; fluency or working knowledge of French an asset;
• Experience working with Office 365 beneficial;
• Experience with web site management beneficial; and
• A passion for the conservation of nature and wildlife.
