Position: Mobile Food Market Assistant
Organization: Mobile Food Market
Location: Halifax/HRM, Nova Scotia

The Mobile Food Market (MFM) is a year-round program that sells fresh and affordable fruit and vegetables to residents of HRM. The MFM operates in 12 locations across 7 communities; North Preston, East Preston, East Dartmouth, Spryfield, Harrietsfield, Fairview and North End Halifax. The communities have been chosen based on having limited access to healthy food, as well as community capacity and interest in supporting the market at a local level. The produce is selected based on residents’ preferences, purchased in bulk and sold at costs that are in line with discount grocery operations.

Once every two weeks we transform a city transit bus into a mobile market that brings healthy produce to North End Halifax and Fairview. That’s where you come in!

The MFM is looking for a core team of MFM Assistants that will travel with the market on Saturdays and support all aspects of the project. This exciting role provides an opportunity for working on the ground in these communities and providing support behind the scenes in the successful operation of our market days. Responsibilities include assisting in the market set-up and take-down, traveling with the bus to each location, working cooperatively with community volunteers, working the check-out, restocking produce, assisting customers, answering questions about the project as a MFM representative, and working to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Two MFM Assistants will travel with the bus at all times and are essential to the success of the project.

What you bring: You are extremely dependable and feel comfortable working in a fast paced environment. You enjoy working with diverse communities of people and thrive in a team environment. You are capable of lifting boxes of produce and willing to commit to a full Saturday once a month to support the MFM.

Where and when: One Saturday a month in rotation with the other MFM Assistants. The Saturday shift has a commitment of 7:30am - 3:00pm. We meet at the Joseph Howe Superstore, 3601 Joseph Howe Drive.

How we’ll support you: You will receive a general orientation as well as one-on-one support from the MFM Coordinator on all market days.

Perks: You are welcome to purchase from our great selection of fresh and affordable produce while working your shift at the market. How efficient! This also happens to be an extremely fulfilling role, rich in positive feedback and community building. Our Coordinator is happy to provide a reference letter if desired..

Next steps: If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you. Please send an expression of interest outlining why you would like to be involved with the project, and how you can contribute to it’s overall success.
