Position: Lead Wilderness Counsellor

You thrive in the wilderness. Your experience with wilderness tripping has given you skills that allow you to lead multi-day experiences. You are looking for a challenging role that will be extremely rewarding. You will lead and mentor youth from low-income families in a wilderness setting through a remarkable summer camp program.

If this sounds like you, consider an opportunity as a Lead Wilderness Counsellor with Tim Horton Camps.

You will 

• establish relationships with youth that reflect respect, trust and empathy
• support the successful execution of multi-day wilderness trip experiences, connecting them back to the program outcomes
• support the successful execution of trip logistics including , pack-out, pack-in, menu selection, and participate in equipment maintenance (repair and replacement) practices
• encourage camper development at their own pace recognizing their achievements
• respond appropriately when addressing challenging camper behaviours as they arise
• model healthy choices and emotional maturity
• identify, assess and appropriately manage risks and off-site crises in line with risk management standards
• provide mentorship, knowledge and skill transfer to other staff
• be challenged physically and mentally as you live in an overnight camp and wilderness setting for 10 day sessions, with 2 days of break in between
• have the opportunity to experience personal growth alongside the campers you are supporting

You are 

• at least 18 years old
• pursuing post-secondary education
• experienced at working with youth aged 12 – 16
• experienced at planning and leading wilderness backpacking/canoeing trips
• strong at group facilitation and successfully adapt facilitation style based on individual or group needs
• equipped with good judgment and decision-making skills; you know when to bring in key team members as it relates to escalated concerns
• fit to participate in multi-day wilderness backpacking/canoeing trips, and maintain energy and focus to support campers in physical and emotional obstacles
• certified in Bronze Cross and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR), or are willing to obtain
• able to provide an acceptable criminal background check
• able to join us between June 2019 and August 30, 2019
