Position: Aquatic Program Manager
Type: full-time permanent
Organization: Eastern Charlotte Waterways
Location: Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick (40 minutes west of Saint John)

Eastern Charlotte Waterways Inc. (ECW) is a not-for-profit environmental research centre in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. ECW is hiring a full-time Aquatic Program Manager that will be based at the ECW office and report to the organization’s Executive Director.

The successful candidate will have the field experience, biological knowledge, and data skills to manage ECW’s existing aquatic science projects. In addition, they will be expected to develop new opportunities, working with ECW staff, partners, and funders, to pursue and implement an effective ridge to reef environmental management model in the Outer Bay of Fundy.

Existing aquatic projects that the successful candidate will manage include:
• impact of underwater noise on marine mammals in the Outer Bay of Fundy
• biodiversity assessment of nekton in the Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area
• eutrophication remediation in the Upper Bay of Fundy watersheds
• water quality, biodiversity, and stream enhancement in the West Fundy composite watershed
• habitat assessment for the SARA listed sympatric pair of Lake Utopia Rainbow Smelt
• partner with Peskotohmukati First Nation on diadromous fish habitat improvements.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
• successfully manage aquatic science projects including budgeting, timeline, equipment, logistics, staff, deliverables, and reporting
• use passive acoustic monitoring, targeted acoustic measurements and AIS data to create an inventory of noise signatures for vessels in the Outer Bay of Fundy and predict impact of noise on communication space for baleen whales and other marine mammals
• install fyke nets and use beach seines to capture and identify species of fish and swimming invertebrates in the Musquash Marine Protected Area, take measurements of the live specimens, and euthanize fish for stable isotope and other analyses
• work with operations staff to schedule field work and ensure safety in the field
• safely operate small motor vessels (14-22 ft) in Bay of Fundy estuarine and near shore marine environments
• maintain project equipment including hydrophones, fyke nets, CTDs, YSI multimeters, etc.
• manage, analyse, and visualize, large aquatic data sets using ESRI’s suite of GIS tools, R, Python, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other relevant statistical packages and data visualization tools
• apply for and report upon necessary activity permits from federal and provincial governments
• manage project technicians and summer students to achieve program goals
• secure funding for relevant opportunities in freshwater, estuarine, and marine habitats that address program goals
• work closely with counterparts in the Peskotohmukati Nation, to achieve mutual priorities

The successful candidate will require the following skills and experience:
• a graduate degree in a relevant topic
• project management experience including grant writing, reporting, and implementation
• a strong understanding of underwater noise and its impact on marine mammal communication
• the ability to identify fish and swimming invertebrates commonly found in the Outer Bay of Fundy
• exceptional data analysis skills using R, python, and other tools to manage and analyse large data sets
• experience working with GIS databases using ESRI ArcGIS software
• proficient in small vessel operation with MED A1 and SVOP marine safety certifications highly desirable
• valid driver’s license and experience with four wheel drive vehicle and maneuvering boat trailers
• experience using and maintaining field equipment including fyke nets, beach seines, YSI multimeter, CTDs, and hydrophones
• CPR First Aid with Wilderness First Responder and Swift Water Rescue highly desirable
• ability to carry out the physical demands of the job

The salary is commensurate with experience.
