Conservation Engagement Intern – Halifax, NS and Fredericton, NB (2 positions)

Purpose and General Description:

The Conservation Engagement Intern will assist with the coordination and delivery of NCC’s Conservation Volunteers Program, designed to engage individuals of all ages in performing priority stewardship work on, or simply enjoying and learning more about NCC’s conservation properties. The Intern will also assist in the planning and delivery of outreach and educational events on NCC properties, and will interact with volunteer Property Stewards and contribute to other Stewardship program fieldwork and reporting as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead the planning and coordination of Conservation Volunteer events and outreach events;
• Promote events and recruit participants;
• Deliver the events, with the assistance of other NCC staff, meeting NCC health and safety requirements for volunteer events;
• Manage volunteer data and event metrics (paperwork, evaluations, participant follow-up) and organize data collected from the events (bird inventories, measurement of work accomplished, etc.);
• Liaise with NCC Atlantic Region Volunteer Coordinator to coordinate tasks and activities;
• Assist with the volunteer Property Steward program;
• Assist the with fieldwork and other stewardship activities as needed and manage that data;

Required Skills and Attributes:

This posting is targeted to someone possessing the following skills and abilities:
• University or college student preferably entering 3rd or 4th year, or recent graduate. Must have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
• Attention to detail with excellent time management and organizational abilities;
• Proactive and capable of working independently;
• Strong communication and public speaking skills;
• Experience organizing events;
• Interest in public engagement and communicating conservation messages;
• Fluency in both English and French is a strong asset (NB);
• Comfortable in a dynamic setting, including outdoor environments, under various weather conditions (e.g. temperature and precipitation extremes) and in variable terrain;
• Demonstrated interest in natural history and land conservation, basic plant and wildlife identification skills and an understanding of conservation issues are an asset;
• Wilderness or Standard First Aid training;
• Familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, graphics programs);
• Valid Driver’s License and able to rent a car (must be at least 21 years of age to rent);

Terms of Employment:
• This is a full-time, 16-week (May 6– August 23, 2019) position. Salary is $17/hour for a 37.5 hour week.
• These two positions are based out of Halifax NS, and Fredericton, NB but require the ability to travel throughout the province to prepare for and attend events. Most events take place on weekends and some will require overnight travel. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
• Due to funding requirements must be under 31 years of age at the start of the employment;
• Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
• Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations;
