About the Atlantic Salmon Federation

The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is an international non-government organization founded in 1948 to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon and their ecosystems. ASF is headquartered in St. Andrews, N.B., Canada and maintains offices in Brunswick Maine, Quebec, and each Atlantic Canadian province. Through ASF's membership and affiliated volunteer network, the organization represents more than 25,000 individuals who share our commitment to wild rivers and wild salmon.

Position Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Regional Program Director (RPD) serves as ASF’s point person for wild Atlantic salmon conservation and restoration in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The RPD’s primary activities are evidence-based advocacy, outreach, and community engagement. Duties include meeting with relevant federal and provincial officials and elected representatives, preparing and delivering recommendations to advisory bodies, and advocating for the protection of wild salmon from key threats according to ASF’s strategic plan. The successful candidate will lead ASF involvement in public consultation and environmental assessment of projects in the region that may affect wild Atlantic salmon. Other responsibilities include public speaking, media interviews, assisting ASF’s research team, and assisting ASF’s fundraising team.

The RPD also serves as a liaison and advisor to ASF’s regional councils and affiliates in the area, including the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, the P.E.I. Council of the Atlantic Salmon Federation, and dozens of associated local partners engaged in salmon conservation. The successful candidate will work in close contact with ASF’s Director of Regional Programs and other ASF staff located throughout eastern North America.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate should possess knowledge of Atlantic salmon life history, biology, and fisheries, as well as threats and the current conservation status of the species in N.S. and P.E.I. Strong communication skills and an understanding of public policy and social dimensions related to Atlantic salmon are also necessary. Thorough knowledge, skills, and experience in the following areas would be considered and asset:
• Indigenous fisheries and First Nations conservation perspectives
• Environmental assessment and regulations governing terrestrial and marine industries
• Recreational angling values, practices, and realities
• Habitat restoration and project management

The candidate must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, analytical and collaborative problem-solving skills, and proficient computer skills. This is an English essential position with French considered an asset.

The successful candidate must reside within Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island and will be required to travel regularly. A reliable personal vehicle is required.

Education and Experience

Qualifications for this position would normally be acquired through post-secondary education, supplemented by progressive work experience. An equivalent combination of education, background, and experience, including volunteer work, may also be considered.
