Farm worker position on organic haskap orchard/homestead

Position: Farm Worker
Type: paid f/t plus housing (see below)
Organization: Sweet Earth Farm
Location: Earltown, Nova Scotia (housing available)

We are looking for help this season in our organic haskap orchard and across our homestead. If you are hardworking, enjoy being outdoors and are interested in organic and regenerative agriculture – we invite you to join our team!

Sweet Earth Farm is a small family-owned farm with a 10-acre organic & biological haskap orchard and mixed pastured livestock (chickens, pigs and cows) in West Earltown, NS (1/2 hour north of Truro). As much as practical, we implement regenerative agriculture methods, including rotational grazing, living mulch, no-till, etc. The farm comprises about 65 acres of pasture and 120 acres of woodlot, with trails, brooks/river and beautiful scenery.

Our summers are extremely busy and we need to hire two full-time seasonal employees to work with us in our orchard and to assist from time to time with livestock management. Preference will be given to those with farming experience. Candidates must be Canadian citizens.

Job Description:

The Farm Worker will be working primarily in our haskap orchard. Tasks will include:
• Transplanting seedlings/shrubs from nursery to orchard.
• Installing birdnetting, deer fencing and fence posts.
• Weeding, pruning, irrigating and mowing orchard.
• Applying compost tea, foliar sprays and organic amendments.
• Harvesting haskap berries and making observations about overall plant health and vigor.
• Occasional assistance with livestock management, including (but not limited to) moving chicken tractors, moving temporary electric fencing and crating chickens prior to processing.
• Working at local farmers’ market (1 afternoon per week).

You must be content to work outside for all of each day, regardless of weather conditions and must be reasonably fit as you will be required to move for much of the day, including squatting, reaching, bending, kneeling, lifting, etc. You must be a team player, but also content to work alone, depending upon the task. You must also value healthy, nutritious and delicious food! Training will be provided, as needed.

No smokers please.

Compensation: $11.55/hr; 40 hrs/week, minimum.

Housing: Brand new small off-grid cabin is available on-farm in exchange for modest rent and assistance with daily chores. Must be content to live simply, with few amenities. Alternatively, off-farm housing may be secured if candidate has a vehicle.

Time Commitments: Positions are available from beginning of mid-May to mid-August, with some flexibility, depending on circumstances.

Opportunities: There may be opportunities to continue living and/or working at Sweet Earth Farm beyond the season, if there is mutual interest.

If you are interested in this position, please email a cover letter and resume to sweetearthfarm at live.ca , subject: “job application”.

Thank you for your interest!
