The Whale Camp at the Fundy Marine Science Institute is dedicated to providing marine biology experiential educational programs and facilities for learning about the dynamic marine ecology of the Bay of Fundy as well as the coastal, terrestrial and human ecologies of Grand Manan Island. Our goal is to use hands-on, discovery-oriented marine science activities to increase awareness and understanding of these living systems and by extension the living systems of our oceans and planet. Camp Director Position:
We seek a highly qualified and specialized individual to fill a camp director position at our residential science, nature, adventure camp. Our program includes whale watching trips, kayaking, and general observation of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins, eagles, and a wide variety of seabirds. Our activities and lessons focus largely on the intertidal zones and the dynamic marine and terrestrial ecosystems of the Bay of Fundy. We also offer a college credit program to students wishing to deepen their knowledge and skills in marine science. You would be responsible for overseeing the coordination, execution, and documentation of these activities and in supervising and managing staff and campers.
Requirements:
This position is a management role requiring significant experience in management and camp programming, demonstrated leadership skills, and strong knowledge of educational pedagogy and ecology. This position is responsible for carrying the vision of camp, including expertise to train staff in field teaching strategies, plant and animal identification, and natural science concepts (ecology, geology, oceanography). The candidate must have at least three years of experience teaching science in informal settings (outside of classroom) using a variety of teaching techniques and confidence to train staff in content and pedagogy. At least two years of management experience is required, including some residential camp management experience.
Must be flexible, patient, have a positive attitude, and sense of humor. Most time will be spent working in the office overseeing camp operations of logistics coordinator, program director, kitchen staff, and teaching staff. Some time will be spent in the field evaluating science and recreation instructors. Must have strong organizational background, computer skills, enthusiasm for working with youth and adults in an outdoor setting, ability to motivate others, demonstrated ability to facilitate group dynamics and manage staff in an outdoor camp environment. CPR / First Aid certification required. Additional wilderness emergency training preferred.
Work Experience:
At least three years science teaching experience in informal setting (outside of classroom).
Two years previous management experience required, including some residential camp management experience.
At least two years of experience developing and managing budgets, marketing and advertising
Education:
Bachelor's degree in a natural science field, environment, or education required.
Masters degree in education, environment, natural sciences, or leadership/management highly preferred.
Responsibilities: Major responsibilities are directing and overseeing all aspects of camp coordination and programming - including but not limited to:
Manage/supervise program and logistics coordinators, teaching staff, and kitchen staff in a small, dynamic work environment
Recruit and hire staff
Train new and returning environmental science instructors and outdoor recreation and dorm instructors in camp procedures, content knowledge, and teaching strategies
Mentor, evaluate, and lead feedback sessions with program staff throughout the summer
Implement Whale Camp policies and procedures, modify as needed
Facilitate group initiatives and team building exercises
Be a positive role model and mentor for staff and campers
Maintain and display a positive and encouraging attitude at all times
Arrange schedule for all daily and evening programs, including daily staff scheduling and days off
Organize, maintain and update all registration and payments for student and adult programs
Coordinate, confirm, and monitor trips, programs, and other services with island contractors
Coordinate all programs, camper dietary restrictions and food allergies with kitchen staff
Coordinate teaching group lists, medical lists, housing lists and transportation lists
Prepare travel and transportation days when needed
Facilitate and lead weekly staff meetings along with logistics coordinator/program director
Mediate interpersonal or behavioral issues and manage/discipline as needed
Communicate with parents regarding logistics, payments, and any camper issues
Develop and practice campus emergency and safety plans; provide first aid for injuries and illnesses as needed
Order supplies and equipment for the camp as needed
Prepare and manage operating budget
Develop and implement marketing and advertising plan
Manage social media accounts
Term of Employment: June 19, 2019 - August 30, 2019

Compensation
Pay: $30-$42 per hour; 30 hours per week
Housing and food provided for full work period
