Position: Lead Instructor
Immediate Supervisor: Atlantic Canada Program Manager
Organization: Outward Bound Canada
Location: New Brunswick
Start date: July 2019 August 2019, or a contract within this time

About the Position
As a Lead Instructor, we expect high levels of professionalism, experience in leading groups on backcountry expeditions and a thorough understanding of how to manage risk. Outward Bound Canada is looking for enthusiastic, hardworking individuals who have the credentials and capacity to work providing exceptional educative programming to students. Our students include both school and community groups as well as individuals looking for challenging journeys of self-discovery.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for the health and well-being of students while on program.
Effectively utilize group and risk management skills, maturity and role modeling to create a supportive environment for student-centered learning.
Facilitate positive peer interactions among students.
Manage in-field risk management decisions.
Present clear and effective lessons to engage students in learning.
Utilize different methods and styles of teaching.
Monitor, assess and evaluate students.
Work effectively with different populations.
Achieve the objectives of the Outward Bound Canada National Risk Management Policy.
Complete various program-related administrative documents and tasks.
Has the ability to deal with unpredictable non-routine situations.
Regularly works in a mentoring role with less experienced Instructors and Assistant Instructors.
Ability to operate within and provide direction to peers surrounding performance-based training and assessment guidelines.
Achieve the objectives of the Outward Bound Canada National Safety Policy.
Facilitate all incident reporting and high-school credit processes.
Skills and Experience
Experience on extended wilderness trips
Ability to model and teach outdoor travel and living skills whilst backpacking.
Well practiced in communicating effectively with a high level of professionalism.
Technical and interpersonal excellence, effective in facilitating clients through the broad range of emotions experienced on our courses.
Experience working with youth in an outdoor setting.
Ability to facilitate and lead both youth and adults of various abilities.
Experience in adventure and experiential educational module delivery.
Understanding and application of Outward Bound methods and philosophy.
Skilled in behaviour management, crisis intervention and problem-solving.
Experience in adventure and experiential educational module delivery.
Comfort in working with youth from various backgrounds
Certifications
Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
CPR-C
Canoe and/or kayak training
Class 4 Drivers License (Asset)
Post Secondary education in outdoor education, adventure therapy, or relevant field.
Position requires police background check including Vulnerable Sector Check
