Job Title: Trail Crew Supervisor
Organization: McIntosh Run Watershed Association
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Job Description: The McIntosh Run Watershed Association (MRWA) is hiring a Trail Crew Supervisor to build singletrack trails between Spryfield and Herring Cove, Nova Scotia. The trails form part of the approved network of recreational trails on NS Crown Land and Halifax Park Land.

The Trail Crew Supervisor (“Supervisor”) will work 4-5 days per week, for 6-8 hours per day in the forest, hiking up to 40 minutes to the job site carrying gear. Work consists of heavy manual labour with hand tools: clearing organic ground layer, trees and brush, lifting and moving large rocks and shoveling dirt. The result is a backcountry singletrack trail that will draw people into the forest to explore by foot and by mountain bike.

The Supervisor will take direction from the MRWA Trails Committee. Experienced MRWA volunteer trail builders will provide guidance and will help to train a crew of 3-4 members. The Supervisor will supervise and work with the crew as a coordinated team to perform many challenging tasks. The Supervisor will also be expected to guide volunteers who will occasionally work with the crew. The Supervisor will ensure that safe work practices are followed by crew and volunteers, and will report any injuries according to MRWA policies.

The Supervisor will keep a back-up record of Trail Crew hours and will collect and check bi-weekly timesheets and deliver them to the payroll office (Chebucto Connections in Spryfield). The Supervisor will distribute pay cheques to the crew, in coordination with MRWA Treasurer.

Requirements:
• Experience building singletrack recreational trails with hand tools.
• Experience leading a team, coaching, and or supervising.
• Knowledge of singletrack trail standards and ratings.
• Physically fit for manual labour, able to lift heavy loads.
• Comfortable in a wild forest setting with adverse weather, bugs and dirt.
• Experience working well with others.
• Punctual and reliable.
• Ability to communicate clearly, both verbal and written.

Preferred qualifications:
• Experience training and supervising other trail builders (either paid or volunteers).
• Mountain biking experience.
• First aid certification.
• Clearing saw or chainsaw certification.

Rate of pay: $20 per hour

Work schedule: 4–5 days/week, 6–8 hours/day, weekdays with occasional (optional) weekend days. Work weeks may be shortened due to poor trail-building weather conditions. Please describe your availability in cover letter.

Work period: June 24th – early September 2019. Work may be extended into November if additional funds become available.

Applications must include:
• A cover letter in which you explain how you are qualified for the job and specify your expected availability through the beginning of November.
• A resume
• Contact information for 2 references

Closing Date: Wednesday, 12 June, 2019.
