Position: Aquatic Species at Risk Project Coordinator
Organization: Clean Annapolis River Project
Location: Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia

Anticipated Start date: ASAP 
End date: March 31, 2020 with possibility for extension
Starting Remuneration: $16.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay and statutory benefits at 35 hours per week.

Eligibility

Applicants must have at minimum a university degree or technical diploma related to biological sciences, ecology, fisheries management, or a related discipline. A minimum of three years employment or voluntary experience related to aquatic/fisheries ecology will be considered a strong asset. Knowledge of at risk fish populations including Atlantic whitefish and Atlantic salmon (southern upland and Inner Bay of Fundy populations), and invasive fish species including smallmouth bass and chain pickerel will be important to successfully meet the responsibilities required. This position will require strong technical, organizational, and communications skills (both written and oral), as well as the ability and desire to engage directly and frequently with the general public and the angling population. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle during work hours is necessary. While work hours a generally from 8:30am-4:30pm, some evening and weekend work will be required.

Applicants will benefit from the following certifications/training and experience:
• In-field fish population sampling techniques (electrofishing, seine netting, trap netting etc.)
• eDNA sampling techniques
• Management of projects involving multiple partners
• Use of Geographic Information Systems

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Aquatic Species at Risk Coordinator will lead the delivery of a regional project involving numerous partners representing the conservation community, First Nations, and government that seeks to support the recovery of at risk fish species through various actions aimed at better understanding the extent of the threat posed by invasive fish, minimizing the spread of invasive fish into new habitats, developing tools and strategies for the conservation community, and raising the level of awareness and engagement among the general public and the angling community.

Specific tasks can include:
• Leading the coordination of all project partners toward the achievement of project targets
• Leading the development and implementation of an angler survey program across multiple watersheds
• Leading the development and delivery of a volunteer citizen science program with the angling community
• Conducting and coordinating field monitoring and sampling for invasive fish species by CARP and partners
• Updating GIS databases and mapping of invasive fish distribution in NS
• Facilitating and participating in the development of assessment and planning tools to minimize the spread of invasive fish
• Planning and facilitating public events and workshops aimed at increasing public awareness and knowledge of fish species at risk and invasive fish species
• Analyzing and synthesizing data, and preparation of technical reports and general communications materials
• Participating in monthly staff meetings and preparing monthly summary reports for the Board of Directors.
• Other field and office-based tasks as directed by CARP management.
