Job Title: Trail Crew
Organization: McIntosh Run Watershed Association
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Job Description: The McIntosh Run Watershed Association (MRWA) is hiring 1-2 energetic people to join a Trail Crew to build singletrack trails between Spryfield and Herring Cove, Nova Scotia. The trails form part of the approved network of recreational trails on NS Crown Land and Halifax Park Land.
The Trail Crew works 4-5 days per week (Tuesday-Saturday), for 6-8 hours per day in the forest. The Trail Crew will hike up to 40 minutes to the job site carrying gear. Work consists of heavy manual labour with hand tools: clearing organic ground layer, trees and brush, lifting and moving large rocks and shoveling dirt. The Trail Crew will be trained and supervised by a Trail Crew Supervisor and experienced MRWA volunteer trail builders. The Trail Crew, Supervisor and volunteers must work together as a coordinated team to perform many challenging tasks. The result is a backcountry singletrack trail that will draw people into the forest to explore by foot and by mountain bike.
Requirements:
Physically fit for manual labour, able to lift heavy loads.
Comfortable in a wild forest setting with adverse weather, bugs and dirt.
Experience using recreational trails.
Experience working well with others.
Punctual and reliable.
Preferred qualifications:
Trail building or other relevant experience with manual labour, outdoors (landscaping, working with rocks, working with hand tools). Please explain how your experience is relevant to the job.
Mountain biking experience.
First aid certification.
Clearing saw or chainsaw certification.
Rate of pay: $17 per hour
Work schedule: 45 days/week, 68 hours/day, The current schedule is Tuesday-Saturday but this may change. Work weeks may be shortened due to poor trail-building weather conditions. Please specify your availability in cover letter.
Work period: Immediately early November 2019. Work may be extended into December if additional funds become available and the weather cooperates.
