Position: Heritage Programming Coordinator
Organization: Lake Charlotte Area heritage Society
Location: anywhere in Nova Scotia

Eligibility: 30 or younger (see below for more details)
Type: Contract for 15 weeks at 20 hrs. / week

Background

The Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society owns and operates a 1940s era living history museum called Memory Lane Heritage Village. The Village is comprised of 18 rescued buildings from local coastal communities along Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore and became the first 100% solar powered museum in Nova Scotia in 2019 by installing a 20kW solar array and performing site-wide energy efficiency upgrades.

Village life is defined by the innovations of the 1940s and the changes they brought to rural Nova Scotia: electricity, road building, women’s work outside the home, the time-saving inventions of modern living, and a DIY attitude. Memory Lane is a community owned museum which relies heavily on volunteers who help in all aspects of Village operations, from the peeling of potatoes, to animation, archival assistance, and maintenance. The Village welcomes more than 13,000 visitors per year, and hosts over six special events and festivals, including the Cold Waters Seafood Festival, the Father’s Day Antique Car Show, the Atlantic Canada Harmonica Festival and the Women’s Heritage Celebration. In addition to these annual events, the Village also organizes group tours for seniors, school groups, special needs youth and adults, and tour busses. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Heritage Village has been working to create online learning opportunities as well as new programming to be del
 ivered in 2021.

The Heritage Programming Coordinator will work remotely under the direction of the Executive Director and with the assistance of the Archives Assistant to develop heritage programming for upper elementary and junior high grades which is curriculum focused. Topics to explore include health, hygiene and controlling infectious diseases in the 1940s and parallels with today’s pandemic; reuse, recycling and resource allocation in the 1940s wartime period and parallels with today’s environmental values.
