Position: Neighbourhood Goods Intern
Organization: Halifax Brewery Market
Location: Halifax (downtown), Nova Scotia

ABOUT THE POSITION 

Halifax Brewery Market seeks to provide locally grown and harvested food in a festive atmosphere in the historic Alexander Keith Building in downtown Halifax. The Neighbourhood Goods Intern will bring enthusiasm and dedication to operating the farmers market’s new food store; Neighbourhood Goods. They will also undertake research to reduce waste onsite at the market and minimize waste being brought onsite by our vendors, while still complying with all public health requirements. The candidate should be passionate about food, local farming, agriculture and community. The Intern will report directly to the Market Manager & Program Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Market Day duties including setting up and tearing down the market, and participating in the durable dishes program.
• Weekday duties include:
• Staff & Administer the market’s Neighbourhood Goods food shop program:
• Recruit vendors into the program
• Develop all materials required for the program
• Develop a break-even analysis for the program
• Market the program and develop a customer base
• Manage finances for the program
• Grant writing to support materials for this program.
• Administer the market’s Zero Waste program:
• Research options for waste reduction onsite
• Collaborate with packaging manufacturers, food safety specialists and waste management professionals to create educational resources for vendors
• Coordinate economies of scale for compostable packaging alternatives
• Create a waste diversion, waste reduction and zero-waste program that is both consumer and vendor faced
• Develop all materials required for the program
• Grant writing to support materials for this program.

POSITION DETAILS

This is a part-time flexible 9-month to 1-year contract position requiring a commitment of 15-20 hours weekly at a rate of 20$/hour. We hope to continue employment with the candidate after the completion of their internship. Work hours and location are flexible. Occasional availability on Market Days (Saturdays) is required.

QUALIFICATIONS 
• Experience in fast-paced environments, project coordination, administration, communication & marketing, self-directed time management, and grant writing.
• Passion for locally produced food, involvement in local food politics, regular participation in their community.
• Enthusiasm for and understanding of the not-for-profit and cooperative sectors.
• Sympathetic to the historic buildings and Nova Scotia’s Farmers Market community.
• Physical ability to setup and tear down the market.
• Current Safe Food Handling Certificate is ideal.

This position is funded through the AAFC’s Youth Employment and Skills Program. 

To qualify, the intern must be:
• 30 years or younger at the start of the internship
• unemployed, student or underemployed
• have not participated in any other Youth Employment and Skills Strategy program (Agricultural Youth Green Jobs Initiative and/or Career Focus Program)
• a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
