Overview:

Reports to: DSU Executive

Salary Range: Starting at $60,000, commensurate to experience & qualifications

Education: Post-Graduate/Masters Degree preferred or equivalent experience, experience working with membership-based organizations is required.

General Duties:
• Report weekly, to the officers, to ensure that executive directives are effectively followed and implemented.
• Report weekly to the President and executive on key activity areas.
• Work closely with executive officers to implement short and long-term strategy and planning for facilities, programs and services, including the investigation of new business opportunities.
• Manage the following departments: Facilities Management, Accounting, Campus Copy, Meetings and Events, The Grawood, and the T-Room.
• Work closely with the Director: Research & Outreach to implement strategic planning for services, business, and operations.

Operations Management:
• Ensure the building, operations, services and events are managed utilizing risk management principles and practices.
• Manage external contracted service agreements, which include fee agreement with the University, food services, beverages, health plan, short-term lobby bookings, etc., and ensure terms and conditions are of maximum benefit to the student union
• Ensure the required support and research is available to Executive Officers in contract negotiations.
• Administer liability insurance for societies and organizations funded by DSU Inc.

Human Resources:

Provide human resources management, including direct authority over hiring, discipline and dismissal, as well as staff relations, record keeping, salary administration, benefits, vacations, sick days, etc. for the following departments: Facilities Management, Accounting, Campus Copy, Meetings and Events, The Grawood, and the T-Room.

Ensure that performance is assessed on an ongoing basis and that corrective action is taken to address performance issues.

Work closely with the Director: Research & Outreach to draft and update human resources policies for hiring, record keeping, training, professional development, staff relations, attendance, payroll, performance, and dismissal, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and DSU bylaws.

Licensed Operations:
• Oversee the licensed operations of the DSU, including operations and management of the Grawood and the T-Room.
• Preparation of yearly budgets in conjunction with the VP Finance and Operations.
• Analysis of month end financial statements in conjunction with the VP Finance and Operations and Controller.
• Manage hiring and directing part-time staff for Bar Services.

Required Education, Experience and Skills:
• Post-Graduate/Masters Degree preferred or equivalent experience.
• 3-5 years of experience in general management is a requirement.
• Experience working with membership-based organizations is a requirement.

Experience and leadership within a not-for-profit environment is an asset.

Prior knowledge and experience within the Dalhousie Student Union is an asset.
